Flick Shuts Door on Hafiz Gariba for Now

Barcelona’s centre-back cupboard looks worryingly light, but Hansi Flick is not ready to reach into the academy for Hafiz Gariba just yet.

Club sources indicate the German coach does not currently see the highly rated teenager as a realistic first-team option for the 2026/27 season, despite the obvious shortage of natural central defenders in the senior squad.

It is a harsh reality check for one of La Masia’s most talked-about prospects.

A fast riser who caught Barça’s eye

Gariba’s name has been circulating around Spanish scouting circles since his days at Escuela Marcet. His performances there dragged several top clubs into the race, yet it was Barcelona who ultimately convinced him with a long-term project.

In February 2025, the defender signed a three-year deal, tying him to Barça until 2028. From that point, his progress has been closely monitored – and, internally at least, warmly received.

Coaches quickly noticed the same things the scouts had seen. His imposing frame. His ability to eat up ground when chasing back. The way he reads passing lanes and steps in to intercept at just the right moment.

Since arriving in Catalonia, Gariba has become a fixture for Juvenil A, blending physical power with sharp defensive instincts. Within the academy, there is little doubt: this is a player on the right track.

Chance with the first team slips away

This summer was supposed to be his window.

With Barça preparing for a demanding 2026/27 campaign and the centre-back pool looking thin, Gariba’s name naturally pushed itself into the conversation for pre-season minutes with the senior squad.

There was genuine optimism that he would train under Flick and maybe even feature in early friendlies. Then a fever hit.

The illness ruled him out of first-team sessions and cost him a place in the match against CE Europa. The door that had creaked open slammed shut before he could step through it.

As Barcelona’s lack of depth at centre-back became more obvious, his name surfaced again as a possible solution. On paper, it made sense: a promising, physically ready defender already under contract, already impressing in the youth ranks.

But paper is one thing. Flick’s plans are another.

Flick’s hierarchy is set

Inside the first-team group, the order at centre-back is clear.

Pau Cubarsi, Andreas Christensen and Gerard Martin are the recognised central defenders at Flick’s disposal. Jules Kounde can slot inside as well, though the Frenchman is currently being used primarily at full-back.

That leaves Barcelona walking a tightrope in a season that will be packed with fixtures. It also throws Gariba’s situation into sharper focus: he is close enough to be talked about, but not close enough to be trusted.

For now, the message from Flick is firm. Gariba’s development is encouraging, his potential obvious, but the Barcelona coach is not prepared to lean on him at senior level yet.

The question is how long a talent like this will be asked to wait.
