The signs at Barcelona are clear. The forward did not train on Thursday and had already been excused from Wednesday’s session, a strong indication that the operation is in its final phase rather than a routine absence.

The fee is expected to land at around €55 million. For a player with just one year left on his contract, Barcelona view that figure as a significant piece of business. The sporting loss is obvious – this is a World Cup final hero walking out the door – but the financial logic is hard to ignore for a club still wrestling with economic constraints.

Ferran’s exit is not an isolated move. It sits at the heart of Barcelona’s wider summer plan, and one name dominates that plan: Rodri.

The Catalan club have already tested Manchester City’s resolve twice. First with a €50 million offer, then with a second proposal worth €60 million including variables. Both have been rejected.

Barcelona, though, have not backed off. Inside the club there is confidence that a deal can still be struck, and a third offer is being prepared. The idea is a package in the region of €70 million – €60 million fixed plus €10 million in add-ons.

That is where Ferran’s sale becomes crucial. The income from PSG does not just help balance the books; it gives Barcelona more room to manoeuvre on the fee and, just as importantly, on La Liga squad registration rules.

One major departure to fund one marquee arrival. That is the equation.
