Ferland Mendy Undergoes Surgery to Save Career

Ferland Mendy has taken the surgical route in his fight to save his career.

The Real Madrid left-back underwent an operation on his troublesome right thigh on Monday in Lyon, a procedure aimed at finally resolving a recurring injury that has stalked his season. A medical source confirmed the surgery and described it as successful, with an expected recovery time of three to four months.

That prognosis brings a measure of relief. Inside the club and around the player, there had been genuine fear the 30-year-old could be sidelined for up to a year. The issue, described as career-threatening, flared again during a La Liga match on May 3 and left serious doubts hanging over his long-term future at the top level.

This is not a one-off setback. Far from it.

The former Le Havre and Lyon defender has endured his fifth injury of the season, a brutal run for a player whose game is built on power, acceleration and sharp changes of direction. Each time he has pushed back to fitness, another problem has dragged him away from the pitch.

For Mendy, the location of the operation carries its own symbolism. Lyon is where he first announced himself to Europe, where his form earned the move to Real Madrid and a place among the elite. It is also another stop on a journey that began in the Paris Saint-Germain youth system, a path that once seemed to be heading in only one direction: upwards.

Between 2018 and 2024, he collected 10 caps for France, competing in one of the most talent-rich defensive pools in international football. Now the challenge is more basic, more brutal: get healthy, stay healthy, and prove he can still be the same force down the left flank when he returns.

Three to four months offers hope. A year would have raised far darker questions.

Real Madrid and Mendy now wait to see if this operation finally draws a line under a season that has tested both his body and his resolve.
