Fenerbahce's Matteo Guendouzi Suspended for Post-Match Brawl

Fenerbahce’s Matteo Guendouzi has been hit with a four-match European suspension – with half of it suspended – and a 50,000-euro (£43,000) fine for his role in the ugly post-match brawl that followed the club’s Champions League play-off win at Lyon.

The French midfielder’s punishment comes after Uefa ruled he had “insulted others present at the match, provoked spectators and violated the basic rules of decent conduct” in the clashes that erupted after Fenerbahce sealed a 3-2 aggregate victory to reach the league stage.

Two of Guendouzi’s four games are suspended, meaning he will only serve the full ban if he reoffends during a one-year probationary period.

Sanctions for Mason Greenwood

Mason Greenwood has also been sanctioned. The English striker, who joined Fenerbahce in the summer from Lyon’s fierce rivals Marseille, received a one-match suspended ban and a 30,000-euro (£26,000) fine. His suspension, like part of Guendouzi’s, hangs over him for a year under the same probation terms, after Uefa cited him for “violating the basic rules of decent conduct”.

Consequences for Lyon

Lyon did not escape lightly either.

Goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira has been handed a five-match touchline ban, with two of those matches suspended, after Uefa described his actions as a “serious assault” during the post-game confrontations.

Both clubs have also been fined 50,000 euros for their teams “violating the general and basic rules of conduct”, a clear signal from European football’s governing body that the chaotic scenes at the final whistle have come at a significant cost – and that any repeat could be punished even more severely.
