FC Cincinnati Signs Tyrell Malacia: A Strategic MLS Move

FC Cincinnati have made one of the standout defensive signings of the MLS season, snapping up former Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old Netherlands international has chosen Ohio as the next stop in a career that has already taken in the Premier League, Champions League and a World Cup. He signs a deal running through June 2027, with the club holding an option for the 2027-28 MLS campaign.

For a club with serious Eastern Conference ambitions, this is a move that carries real intent.

Cincinnati clear the runway

To get the deal over the line, Cincinnati’s front office had to get creative.

The club acquired an international roster slot from St. Louis CITY SC, sending $200,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money in return. That price underlines how highly the Orange and Blue value Malacia, and how central they expect him to be in the coming years.

General Manager Chris Albright made no attempt to play down the significance of the signing, calling it the arrival of a player with genuine top-level experience. Cincinnati have not just added depth at full-back; they have brought in a defender who has lived at the sharp end of European football.

A break from Old Trafford’s frustrations

For Malacia, this is a reset.

He joined Manchester United from Feyenoord in 2022 and started brightly under Erik ten Hag, bringing energy and aggression to the left side of defence. Then the injuries hit. Momentum stalled. Opportunities shrank.

Even so, he still amassed 50 appearances for the 20-time English champions, featuring in both the Premier League and European competition. Those minutes came against elite opposition, in high-pressure fixtures, in stadiums where a single mistake can define a season.

Now he swaps Old Trafford for TQL Stadium, trading the weight of United’s scrutiny for the chance to anchor a rising MLS contender.

Experience for the Orange and Blue

Malacia arrives in Cincinnati with more than 250 professional appearances in European football behind him. He has marked some of the world’s most dangerous wingers, dealt with the pace of the Premier League and the tactical demands of the Champions League.

That background immediately raises the level in the Orange and Blue dressing room.

Cincinnati have already started to build the anticipation. Social media teasers have offered glimpses of their new full-back in club colours, stoking excitement ahead of his first appearance in MLS. For a fanbase that has watched the club grow into a conference force, this feels like another step up the ladder.

Silverware and a winning habit

Injury problems may have clouded his time in England, but Malacia does not arrive in the United States empty-handed.

He was part of the Manchester United squad that lifted the 2022-23 EFL Cup, the club’s first major trophy in six years and a significant moment in their attempt to re-establish themselves among England’s elite.

More recently, a loan spell back in the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven brought more success. Malacia contributed to a title-winning 2024-25 Eredivisie campaign, adding a domestic championship to his CV and reinforcing his reputation as a player who understands what it takes to navigate a long season at the top of the table.

His résumé stretches to the international stage as well. With nine senior caps for the Netherlands, he has already worn the Oranje shirt at the highest level and was part of the Dutch squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the team reached the quarter-finals before a dramatic exit.

Now that blend of big-game experience, defensive edge and trophy know-how belongs to FC Cincinnati.

The only question left is how far this signing can push them in the race for MLS silverware.
