Everton Targets Marcus Tavernier for Squad Reshape

Everton’s recruitment drive shows no sign of slowing, and Marcus Tavernier is the latest name firmly on their radar.

Former Everton senior scout Bryan King believes the Bournemouth midfielder is exactly the profile the club should be targeting as they attempt to reshape Sean Dyche’s squad.

“He’s a gainer in the 25, 26, 27 age, isn’t he? So, you know, you’re looking at him, again, good age. He’s done well,” King told Football Insider, underlining the sense that Tavernier is moving into his prime years rather than still being a project.

King highlighted the versatility that will appeal to Everton’s hierarchy.

“He can play midfield, he can play wide. You know, he could be an interesting player to bring in with Johnson. He could certainly lift the midfield, couldn’t he?”

That ability to operate across the middle and in wide areas has been a clear theme of Everton’s summer business. Dyche has been searching for players who can adapt, cover multiple roles, and raise the technical level of a side that has laboured in possession in recent seasons.

Tavernier’s work at Bournemouth has not gone unnoticed by King either.

“He’s done well at Bournemouth. You know, when you look at Bournemouth’s recruitment, it’s been very good, hasn’t it? I mean, Christ, they’ve made a lot of money on sale of players. Bringing them in cheapish and selling them for big money.”

Bournemouth’s model has turned undervalued assets into serious profit. Tavernier fits that mould: a player signed at a reasonable fee, now entering the bracket where bigger clubs start to circle.

Everton have already taken a step.

Journalist Ben Jacobs confirmed on 9 August that the Merseyside club have made an enquiry for the former Middlesbrough man. Posting on his X account, Jacobs reported: “Understand Everton have made an enquiry on Marcus Tavernier. Initial talks on the player side. No approach to Bournemouth.”

So, interest is real, but no formal bid has gone in. Not yet.

If a deal does eventually fall into place, Tavernier would join a growing list of new faces at Goodison Park. The club have already brought in Brennan Johnson, Merlin Rohl, Tyrique George, Hayden Hackney, and Christian Norgaard as part of a sweeping overhaul.

It is a clear attempt to change the profile and personality of the squad in one window. Tavernier, with his engine, flexibility and Premier League experience, would push that transformation a step further.

The question now is simple: do Everton turn enquiry into action before someone else does?
