Ethan Williams Joins Peterborough United from Manchester United

Manchester United have moved another piece off their crowded board, with academy winger Ethan Williams leaving Old Trafford for Peterborough United in a permanent deal.

The 20-year-old, fresh from a pre-season tour with the first team and a goal in the 5-0 win over Rosenborg, has been sold to the League One club as United continue to trim the edges of their squad.

While the headlines around Old Trafford are dominated by the search for a third midfield signing, a new left-back and another striker, the quieter work has been just as ruthless. United have been steadily moving on players they do not see breaking into the senior setup.

United confirmed the move with a short statement: “Academy forward Ethan Williams has agreed a move to League One side Peterborough United, subject to registration.”

A “good signing” and a tidy fee

The fee has not been disclosed by the clubs, but talkSPORT’s chief transfer reporter Alex Crook revealed United will receive just north of £750,000, including performance-related add-ons. On X, Crook described it as a “Good signing for Posh.”

Peterborough framed it as a coup. Their announcement hailed the “permanent signing of highly-rated Manchester United winger Ethan Williams for a sizeable undisclosed fee,” confirming the 20-year-old has signed a long-term contract after completing the formalities at the Bespoke Builds Training Ground.

For a player yet to make a competitive senior appearance for United, it is a significant deal. For Peterborough, it is a statement that fits their model: invest in young, high-upside talent and give them a platform.

Posh boss excited by new weapon

Manager Luke Williams made it clear exactly what he expects from his new wide man.

“Ethan is a player that will give us another option in the wide areas, he is quick, direct and will be a threat and I am looking forward to working with him,” he said.

“He has already got first team experience at a few clubs and joins us after being away with Manchester United on their pre-season tour, so he is fit and ready to go.”

The message is obvious: this is not a project to be parked in the reserves. Peterborough see an immediate weapon on the flanks.

For United, it is another example of the academy doing its job in a different way. Not every graduate walks out at Old Trafford under the floodlights; some fund the rebuild from afar.

Williams now swaps the promise of potential chances at a superclub for the sharp reality of League One football. If he turns that pace and directness into end product, United may soon find themselves watching another of their former prospects climbing back up the ladder.
