Estevao's Chelsea Challenge Amid Brazil Call-Up

Estevao cuts a curious figure at Chelsea right now. On the fringes at club level, yet firmly in the plans of his country.

The 19-year-old forward is still waiting for his first Premier League start of the season and has seen just 27 minutes of action off the bench. For a player of his reputation and attacking flair, that is a thin slice of opportunity. For Brazil, though, it is enough. He is back in the national squad for the upcoming international break.

The contrast is stark. The message from the player is not.

“Every coach has their own way of playing,” Estevao said when asked about working under Xabi Alonso. He didn’t complain. He didn’t bite. Instead, he leaned on the only ground he feels he controls. “We work hard every day and give our best every single day. So that's what I do.”

Competition in Chelsea’s forward line is fierce and the Brazilian knows it. He is not pretending otherwise.

“We have players of extreme quality at Chelsea,” he admitted, framing his situation less as an injustice and more as a challenge. “So what I do is focus on what I can, on what I can control. I try to give my best in training, and when I get the opportunity, I always give my best, and that goes day after day.”

The minutes have been limited, but Estevao is convinced he has made them count.

“In all the opportunities that I get, and that I've had, I think I've seized a lot of those, taken on a lot of those responsibilities,” he said, underlining his belief that cameos can still move the dial with both club and country watching.

For now, his response to a stop-start Chelsea spell is to double down on faith and graft rather than noise.

“I try to control what I can, leave tomorrow in God's hands, and trust in my work.”

The Premier League start still eludes him. The Brazil call-up does not. One of those realities will have to give sooner or later.
