Erling Haaland’s Future: Could Barcelona or Real Madrid Lure Him Away from Manchester City?

Dietmar Hamann recently told GOAL that there is "always a chance" Erling Haaland might leave Manchester City if either Barcelona or Real Madrid come calling. While neither club has made an approach yet, the Norwegian striker remains under contract until 2034, though eventually, a new challenge may appeal.

Haaland’s Record-Breaking Impact at City

Since joining in the summer of 2022, following in the footsteps of his father Alf Inge, Haaland has justified the £51 million ($69m) fee with astonishing performances. “Well, he’s won it all, hasn’t he? He’s won the Champions League, the Premier League, and he’s signed a very long contract. It’s not just up to him whether he leaves or can leave. But naturally, when you’ve achieved everything and been at a club for some time, you might think about it. He was even born in England because of his father’s time in the Premier League. When Barcelona or Madrid come calling, there’s always a chance. But if City say no, with the contract he’s got, it could be tricky since he won’t come cheap.”

Currently, Haaland is focused on helping City, now managed by Enzo Maresca after Pep Guardiola’s departure. With experienced players like Bernardo Silva, Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne, and Ilkay Gundogan having left, new leaders must emerge. Hamann commented:

“When big personalities leave, others have to step up. Ruben Dias remains the team’s leader. Gianluigi Donnarumma, though young, has vast experience as a goalkeeper. Players like Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi show promise but need guidance. Bouaddi is adjusting to a new league, so it’ll take time. The midfield engine room is critical—it’s where matches are won or lost. They need Dias and Donnarumma. Haaland may also need to adopt a bigger leadership role, especially now that previous senior figures are gone.”

On transfer deadline day, City secured Argentine World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for £125 million ($169m), making him the joint-most expensive player in British football history.
