Enzo Fernandez Joins Manchester City: Maresca's Key Signing

Enzo Maresca says his own players were chasing updates on Enzo Fernandez as the transfer window ticked into its final days. They did not just approve of the move. They were lobbying for it.

“I can promise you that in the last four or five days four or five players from the squad were asking if he is coming or not because they want him to be with us,” the Manchester City manager revealed. “It’s very important that he is with us and we are 100% happy with that.”

Fernandez, 25, arrived from Chelsea on deadline day for a joint‑British record fee of £125m, reuniting with Maresca after their spell together at Stamford Bridge. The Argentina international, a World Cup and Club World Cup winner, instantly becomes the headline act in City’s revamped midfield.

Maresca has no plans to ease him in.

He confirmed Fernandez is “ready” to make his City debut on Saturday when newly promoted Coventry City visit the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League. The expectation around the club is that the record signing will feature in some capacity as City unveil their new-look side in front of their own fans.

“I know Enzo quite well and I know what he can bring to the team,” Maresca said. “He is a winner – a winner’s mentality and knows how to win [after] the World Cup, Club World Cup.”

New Leader Arrives, Old Captaincy Order Stands

At Chelsea, Maresca had gone as far as handing Fernandez the armband. At City, the hierarchy is already set.

Ruben Dias has been confirmed as the new club captain, replacing Bernardo Silva, who left in the summer. Erling Haaland, Marc Guehi and Gianluigi Donnarumma form the rest of the leadership group around the Portugal defender.

The arrival of another serial competitor, Maresca insists, only sharpens the edge of that core.

“I just said he is a winner and when you belong to a squad and another winning player arrives, they are always happy,” he explained, underlining why the dressing room pushed so hard for the deal to happen.

Fernandez’s Dream Move, Chelsea’s Reality

Fernandez has not hidden how he views the transfer. In an in‑house interview released on Thursday, he said he had always “dreamed of being at a club as big as City”, a line that landed like a jab at Chelsea among supporters of his former club.

His intention to leave Stamford Bridge had been clear since the turn of the year. Conversations with Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso over the summer did not alter his stance.

“In football many things happen,” Alonso said. “With Enzo we have had conversations and always with respect. What he has done for the club has been great, but now it’s time to move forward. We have players with quality in every position and now we are ready to go.”

Chelsea move on. City, flush with new talent, move up a gear.

A Record-Breaking Rebuild

Behind Fernandez’s signing sits a staggering window of business. City spent a transfer window record £458m on new arrivals, with £327m of that total poured into a reconstructed midfield.

Alongside Fernandez, Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi have been brought in to reshape the centre of the pitch. Wide options Iliman Ndiaye and Allan have also joined, while Geronimo Rulli arrives as back‑up goalkeeper.

The outlay has been partially offset. City recouped more than £300m in player sales, trimming and turning over a squad that had already conquered England and Europe in recent seasons.

Maresca made a point of crediting those above him.

“I am very happy for the effort from the ownership, [chairman] Khaldoon [Al Mubarak] and [director of football] Hugo [Viana]. Very happy,” he said. “In the last days, Iliman and Enzo arrived, and now the squad is complete – it’s finished. Now it is time to work.”

The chequebook is closed. The speculation stops. The real scrutiny begins when Enzo Fernandez walks out at the Etihad and shows whether this dressing room’s most wanted signing can be the one who drives City’s next era.
