Enzo Fernández's Chelsea Future in Doubt Amid Manchester City Interest

Enzo Fernández’s Chelsea future has been thrown back into doubt after Xabi Alonso left the midfielder out of the squad for the EFL Cup tie against Luton Town, with Manchester City circling as the transfer deadline looms.

Reports in Spain, notably from "Marca", underline that Fernández had already made his desire to leave Stamford Bridge clear before the summer window. His omission against Luton, then, did not go unnoticed. In England, the noise is growing that City are actively considering a move before the market shuts.

Alonso, though, tried to strip any drama from the decision.

The Chelsea head coach stressed that the call was strictly tactical and rooted in squad management, not transfer manoeuvring. He labelled the Argentina international “extremely professional” and praised his work on the training ground.

“It was simply about today’s match,” Alonso said after Chelsea’s win over Luton. “We have other players who need minutes to play.”

He was equally firm on the timing. Asked when he decided to leave Fernández out, Alonso replied: “Wednesday evening. It’s a decision I made.”

The message was clear: this was his choice, for this game.

Even so, the context makes it impossible to treat the absence as routine. Fernández, a World Cup winner and one of the most high-profile players in the squad, watched on while his team-mates progressed in the cup. At the same time, City are weighing up whether to test Chelsea’s resolve with a late bid.

Alonso did at least crack the door open for a swift return. He name-checked Sunday’s league match against Brighton at Stamford Bridge as a potential re-entry point for the midfielder.

“Enzo is a good professional. He trains well, and I have nothing to say about that,” Alonso said. “Simply, these are decisions we have to make with the match we played tonight in mind. We’ll see on Sunday.”

For now, Chelsea insist this is rotation and nothing more. But with Manchester City watching closely and the clock ticking on the window, every team sheet, every omission, and every word from Alonso will be read as a clue to where Enzo Fernández will actually be playing when the market finally closes.
