Eclipse Delays Non-League Match: AFC Turnford vs Cuffley Postponed

On most Wednesday nights in Wormley, the biggest concern is whether the pitch will hold up or if a striker will find his touch. This week, AFC Turnford were told something very different: you can’t kick off because the sun’s going out.

The non-league club, who groundshare at Wormley Rovers Football Club in Wormley, Hertfordshire, were ordered to postpone their Herts Senior County League Premier Division fixture against Cuffley because of the solar eclipse.

No floodlights. No game.

Founder-player Ronnie Bates had expected a routine evening. His side were due to start at 19:00 BST, roughly an hour after the partial eclipse was scheduled to begin.

Instead, the message came down from the Herts Senior County League: any match without floodlights could not go ahead during the celestial event. AFC Turnford were stunned.

“It is what it is; we can't do much about it. We've been told if you don't have floodlights, you have to postpone your game,” Bates said. “I was surprised, but we are just following what has been said.”

The timing felt surreal. The eclipse, when the Sun will be almost entirely blocked by the Moon, is expected to last around one hour and 50 minutes, starting at about 18:20 and finishing by 20:10, with exact times shifting slightly depending on location.

For a club built on mates and weekend graft, it’s a new kind of postponement. Rain, frozen pitches, even the odd waterlogged goalmouth – they’ve seen all that. But the sky going dark?

“It's unusual to see a game called off like that, as we've never had it before,” Bates admitted. “We are starting to lose light in the evenings, but we normally play at 15:00.”

AFC Turnford have been around for six years, born from a group of friends who went to Haileybury Turnford School in Cheshunt and decided to turn schoolyard football into something more serious. They now operate in the HSCL Premier Division, pushing to climb the pyramid and documenting their rise on YouTube.

This week’s opponents, Cuffley FC, confirmed the ruling wasn’t isolated. The club said all teams in the league had been contacted by the Herts Senior County League and Hertfordshire FA and told to move any fixtures that could not be played under floodlights on Thursday because of the eclipse.

So the fixture list bends to the cosmos. A rare astronomical event, lasting less than two hours, has done what winter storms and fixture congestion often threaten but don’t always achieve – it has stopped grassroots football in its tracks.

For AFC Turnford, the wait to return under a normal evening sky goes on. The question now is simple: when the sun comes back, how quickly can their promotion push light up again?
