Pau Cubarsí has climbed to the summit of the latest Golden Boy rankings, knocking his Barcelona team‑mate and World Cup revelation Lamine Yamal off top spot. The Barça defender now leads the field of Europe’s best U21 talents, with new Real Madrid signing Yan Diomande completing the podium in third place.

At the very top, it is a familiar Spanish power struggle. Deeper down the list, though, the picture looks very different – especially for the Bundesliga.

Bayern fade, Dortmund rise

The new update delivers a blunt message for Bayern Munich. The German champions have just one player in the top 100: midfielder Lennart Karl. He has dropped four places since the previous list and now sits eighth, but he still carries the flag as the highest‑ranked Bundesliga player.

Behind him, Borussia Dortmund are flooding the field.

That quartet gives Dortmund one of the biggest contingents on the continent. Only Porto, with five players, boast more names on the list.

Dortmund eye Said El Mala – and European top spot

Dortmund might not stay second for long.

The club are pushing hard to sign Cologne winger Said El Mala, one of the most coveted youngsters in Germany. The 19‑year‑old sits 17th in the overall standings, making him the second‑highest‑ranked German professional behind Bayern’s Karl.

Talks between Dortmund and Cologne are ongoing as the clubs haggle over a fee for the attacker. If they strike a deal, Dortmund would add a fifth player to the Golden Boy top 100 and move level with Porto as Europe’s most heavily represented club in the ranking.

Bundesliga’s scattered supporting cast

Beyond Dortmund’s cluster and Bayern’s solitary representative, the rest of the Bundesliga appears only in flashes.

Bayer Leverkusen place two players on the list: Christian Kofane in 19th, close to the elite bracket, and Montrell Culbreath in 53rd. Schalke 04, now working their way back towards former glories, at least have a foothold in the conversation thanks to centre‑back Mertcan Ayhan, who comes in at 97th.

It is a thin spread for a league that prides itself on youth development – and a clear sign of where the current gravitational pull lies.

The Golden Boy award, organised annually by Italian newspaper Tuttosport, has long been a barometer of Europe’s next generation. Only players born in 2006 or later and playing in one of the 25 strongest European leagues are eligible.

This year, Cubarsí’s rise to number one and Dortmund’s aggressive push in the rankings hint at a shifting landscape.
