Deco's Urgent Search for Barcelona's New Centre-Back

Barcelona’s defence has a new problem to solve, and Deco is in a hurry.

Ronald Araujo’s loan move to Liverpool has ripped a hole straight through the heart of Hansi Flick’s back line, and inside the club there is a clear conclusion: the current centre-back options are not enough to carry Barcelona through the entire 2026/27 season.

Deco hunts an instant leader at the back

According to AS, sporting director Deco has thrown himself into the market, focusing on a very specific target: an experienced, left-footed centre-back who can walk straight into the rotation and be trusted from day one.

This is not about adding another prospect. It is about survival over a long, demanding campaign.

Right now, Flick’s main central defensive options are Pau Cubarsí, Eric Garcia, Gerard Martin and Andreas Christensen. There is quality there, but also an obvious issue: depth and experience, especially with Araujo gone and the schedule only getting heavier.

The pressure on that group is already high. One injury, one suspension, and the margin disappears.

The Cortes dilemma

Alvaro Cortes sits right at the centre of the internal debate.

On paper, he could offer extra cover. Flick still considers him an option. But inside the club, there is a lingering doubt: is he really ready to shoulder the responsibility of a regular first-team role across an entire season?

So far, he has lived in the space between the two worlds – occasional appearances, flashes of promise, but no proof yet that he can anchor a defence week after week.

Complicating matters further, Cortes no longer wants to return to Barça Atlètic. He already has offers from other clubs, and a departure in the coming days is on the table. If he goes, Barcelona’s need for another centre-back shifts from urgent to critical.

That is why Deco is not looking for another young defender who needs time and patience. He wants someone who arrives ready to compete, to push the existing starters, not simply learn from them.

A very specific profile – and a tight market

Barcelona’s search is boxed in by two hard lines: the player must be left-footed and experienced, and the deal has to fit within the club’s financial limits.

Several names have already slipped away or been ruled out by that profile.

Luka Vuskovic, for instance, had admirers at Barcelona before completing his move to Brighton. His talent is not in question, but at 19, he does not match what Deco needs right now: reliability born from years, not potential.

The same logic has cooled interest in Jon Martin of Real Sociedad. Barcelona like the defender, but again, his age works against the immediate requirement for a battle-tested presence.

Even Cristian Romero, despite his proven quality and experience, has not been seen as the ideal answer for this very particular puzzle. The club is not simply chasing the best available centre-back on the market; it is chasing a profile that fits tactically, financially and structurally.

Deco’s task is clear and unforgiving: find a left-footed centre-back who brings experience, accepts Barcelona’s economic reality, and can stabilise a back line that has just lost its most imposing figure. The window is closing. The question now is whether the right defender appears before the gap in this defence becomes a fault line in Barcelona’s season.
