Crystal Palace vs Manchester City: Tension Ahead of Clash

Crystal Palace walk into this weekend under a cloud. The trip to Everton was flat, disjointed, and exactly the kind of start that sets nerves jangling around Selhurst Park. Now there’s noise over Ismaila Sarr, with Liverpool circling and the transfer window clock ticking louder by the day.

That’s the tightrope Palace are on. They need to evolve, refresh, maybe even sell. What they cannot do is watch their best players drip out of the squad and hope the goals somehow look after themselves. Because, for all the early stumbles, there is still something in this side. There’s pace, there’s threat, and there is, you sense, at least one goal in them against anyone.

Manchester City Challenge

Manchester City, though, are a different problem entirely.

Pep Guardiola’s side got the job done against Bournemouth, but it wasn’t the slick, ruthless machine we’ve grown used to. They stuttered at times. The experiment with Marc Guehi stepping into midfield gave City an awkward, slightly clunky feel, and you can imagine Mateo Kovacic watching on with a raised eyebrow as his role shifted in real time.

The champions, though, keep adding new layers. Ayyoub Bouaddi is the latest young talent to be folded into Guardiola’s system, and while he will need time to adjust to the demands and tempo, his presence underlines the depth City can call upon even when they’re not at full flow.

This doesn’t look like one of those routine City romps. Palace have enough to bite back, especially if they can ride out the early pressure and find space on the break. The champions might have to work for this one, might even get rattled for spells.

But the pressure usually tells.

Erling Haaland left last weekend without a goal, an unusual blank that rarely lasts long. When he misses out one week, he tends to answer emphatically the next. City may not be at their most fluid yet, but with Haaland prowling and the squad slowly knitting together, they still look strong enough to edge through.
