The year was 2022, Todd Boehly’s first transfer window in charge at Stamford Bridge. Fresh in the door and briefly doubling up as sporting director, the American owner went hunting for a statement signing to launch his new era. Few names scream “statement” louder than Cristiano Ronaldo.

According to The Athletic, Boehly sat down with Jorge Mendes to explore exactly that possibility. Ronaldo, already wrestling with a deeply unsatisfying return to United, suddenly found his name at the centre of Chelsea’s internal conversations. The idea gathered momentum. For Boehly, the chance to bring one of the game’s global icons to London was too big not to chase.

Ronaldo’s second United stint, spanning 2021 to 2023, was unravelling. What began as a triumphant homecoming had turned sour, with on-pitch struggles and off-pitch tension framing his time back in Manchester. Against that backdrop, Boehly sensed an opening and pushed at it, intrigued by the commercial and sporting impact CR7 could deliver in west London.

But Chelsea already had a powerful counterweight in place.

Thomas Tuchel, Champions League winner with the Blues just a year earlier, held the final say on football matters. And he was unmoved by the star power on offer. As reported by The Athletic, Tuchel made his “firm opposition” to any agreement for Ronaldo “very clear on several occasions”.

The pressure from above did not change his mind. Boehly had explored the move, Mendes had been engaged, the path to Stamford Bridge had been sketched out. Then Tuchel shut the door.

With that, one of the more dramatic “what if” chapters of Ronaldo’s late European career vanished, leaving Chelsea to pursue a different vision and the Portuguese forward to seek his future elsewhere, eventually landing at Al-Nassr.
