Cristiano Ronaldo moved to within touching distance of yet another staggering landmark on Friday night, dragging Al Nassr to a 2-1 win over Al Taawoun and edging closer to 1,000 career goals.

Trailing 2-0 at half-time, manager Ange Postecoglou made the bold call to substitute Ronaldo at the break – a decision that drew an angry reaction from his captain, who threw his arms up and dropped the armband on the pitch as he departed.

The gamble worked. Sadio Mane struck twice in the second half to complete a dramatic turnaround and preserve Al Nassr’s perfect start. Postecoglou later backed his star forward, describing Ronaldo as “passionate about football and passionate about Al-Nassr,” a line that neatly captures the burning edge driving this team.
