Cristian Romero Leaves Tottenham for Atletico Madrid in €40m Move

Cristian Romero has drawn a firm line under his Tottenham career, confirming on Aug 14 that he is leaving north London after five turbulent, trophy-delivering seasons – with Atletico Madrid expected to be his next destination in a €40 million deal.

The Argentina defender, a lightning rod for controversy and a leader in equal measure, exits Spurs with 156 appearances, a captain’s armband and a European trophy on his CV. He also leaves a thick file of disciplinary notes, with suspensions punctuating his time in England and fuelling debate over his combustible edge.

Yet when Tottenham finally ended 17 years of waiting for major silverware, it was Romero at the heart of it. In the 2025 Europa League final against Manchester United, he produced a commanding performance that earned him man-of-the-match honours and cemented his place in club folklore.

That night in Europe is clearly the lens through which he wants his Spurs story to be viewed.

“Today, I say goodbye to a place that, for five seasons, was much more than a club,” the 28-year-old wrote on Instagram, framing the farewell as something deeper than a routine transfer announcement.

“It was my home, my challenge and the place where my family and I built such an important part of our lives.

“I leave with a heart full of memories and enormous pride for everything we lived and achieved together.”

Romero arrived in north London with a reputation for aggression and potential. He leaves with something more tangible: a trophy and a legacy he insists was no accident.

“When I arrived, I had a clear dream: to leave my name in this club’s history,” he said. “I knew the only way was through hard work, sacrifice and achieving something that had seemed so difficult for so long: lifting a trophy again. And we did it.”

The journey, as he admits, was anything but smooth. Red cards, high-profile errors and spells on the sidelines sat alongside his best nights in a Spurs shirt. Yet he chose not to dwell on the chaos.

“The journey wasn’t perfect, but I don’t want that to define my goodbye,” Romero added. “I choose to remember the happy moments, the lessons, the people who stood by me and, above all, the love I received during these five years.”

For Tottenham, his departure closes one of the most intense chapters of their recent history. For Atletico Madrid, assuming the move is completed, it opens the door to a defender who brings fire, leadership and a proven taste for the biggest occasions.
