Cristian Romero Joins Atlético Madrid as Defensive Enforcer

Cristian Romero is an Atlético Madrid player. The deal is done, the paperwork signed, and Diego Simeone has his new defensive enforcer.

The 28-year-old Argentina international joins from Tottenham Hotspur on a long-term contract running until 30 June 2031, in a move reported to be worth up to €40 million. Romero completed his medical at the Vithas-Invictum High-Performance Sports Medicine Centre in Madrid before heading to the club’s offices at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano to seal the transfer.

From London leader to Madrid pillar

Romero leaves Spurs after five eventful seasons in north London, a spell that transformed him from promising Serie A defender into one of Europe’s most respected centre-backs.

He first arrived at Tottenham on loan for the 2021-22 campaign, did enough to convince the club almost immediately, and stayed to rack up 156 appearances in all competitions.
