Cristian Orozco Impresses for Manchester United U21s

Cristian Orozco has wasted no time showing Manchester United why they chased him so hard.

The Colombian midfielder, finally able to complete his move from Fortaleza after turning 18 earlier this summer, has already found the net for the club’s Under-21s in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Aston Villa U21s.

He didn’t just sneak one in, either. Orozco scored in a commanding 5-0 win as United’s youngsters ramped up their preparations for the new season.

The defensive midfielder, highly rated inside the club, arrived at Old Trafford after director of football Jason Wilcox led an aggressive push to bring in overseas talent. United had agreed a deal for him last year, but FIFA regulations meant he could only sign once he reached his 18th birthday.

His first real statement came against Villa.

Chido Obi, already in form after a brace against Ipswich earlier this month, kept his hot streak going with more goals against United’s Premier League rivals. Ashton Missin matched that output with a double of his own, while Amir Ibragimov also got on the scoresheet as Villa’s youngsters were swept aside.

For Orozco, the goal is another marker in a rapid rise. He captains Colombia’s Under-17s and had only five senior appearances for Fortaleza under his belt before United moved decisively to bring him to England. His last competitive outing came in May, in a Copa Colombia draw with Cucuta Deportivo.

United’s senior midfield, though, is becoming an increasingly crowded place.

Old Trafford boss Michael Carrick has already strengthened heavily in that area, spending big on Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos. Youri Tielemans then followed, with United activating the £35million release clause in the Belgian’s Aston Villa contract.

That level of investment changes the landscape for a teenager arriving from South America.

United have mapped out a patient pathway for Orozco rather than throwing him straight into the first-team fight. The plan is to let him adapt, grow and learn his role in England before he is exposed to Premier League intensity.

For now, his job is simple: keep impressing quietly in the background.

If he does, that first senior appearance in a red shirt will come. The only question is how long United can keep a talent like this waiting.
