Chido Obi Joins Willem II on Loan from Manchester United

Manchester United have pushed one more deal over the line after deadline day – and it involves one of their most highly regarded academy forwards.

The club have confirmed that 18-year-old Chido Obi has agreed a season-long loan move to Dutch side Willem II, with the switch still subject to registration. The move comes after the English transfer window shut at 11pm on Tuesday, but United were able to exploit the later Dutch deadline, with Eredivisie clubs allowed to trade until midnight on Wednesday.

Twenty-four hours after the window closed in England, United announced Chido’s loan, extending a hectic summer of academy movement at Old Trafford.

Obi heads to Holland

Chido made his senior United debut in February 2025 against Tottenham and has eight first-team appearances to his name. Last season he led the line for the Under-21s, hitting 15 goals in 31 games and underlining why United view him as one of the more potent finishers in their youth ranks.

Now he gets his first crack at regular senior football abroad, joining a Willem II side that can offer minutes and pressure away from the glare of Old Trafford.

Busy summer for the academy

Obi is only the latest youngster to head out on loan. On deadline day itself, Jack Moorhouse agreed a temporary move to Dundee, with that deal confirmed on Wednesday evening.

They are part of a wider exodus designed to clear pathways and raise standards. Ethan Wheatley, Jacob Devaney and Jayce Fitzgerald have all left on loan during the summer, swelling the list of academy products gaining experience elsewhere.

There has been a harder edge to the business too. United have sanctioned a series of permanent exits involving academy graduates. Toby Collyer ended his spell at Old Trafford by joining West Brom in a deal that could be worth up to £7.6million, while highly rated goalkeeper Radek Vitek moved to promotion-chasing Middlesbrough, a transfer that may rise to around £14m.

In total, 26 players have departed United this summer, either permanently or on loan. The club had targeted even greater income from sales but once again found it difficult to shift senior players deemed surplus to requirements.

So the academy has carried much of the movement – and with Chido Obi now heading for Willem II, United will discover whether this latest loan shapes a future first-teamer or builds value for the next big decision.
