Fernandez, amid intense speculation over his future, was left out as the Manchester City move gathered pace. Once the deal went through, Alonso was left to explain a bold decision and a thinner squad.

Speaking after Chelsea’s wild 4-3 win over Brighton, Alonso kept his stance clear when asked about Fernandez and the wider situation.

“We will see. We want the best for team. If anything that will happen or develop, we are not sure. We are preparing for all the scenarios, but I know that from Wednesday, we have a team to challenge and I want to win,” he said.

Those “scenarios” now include the prospect of Wijnaldum walking back into the Premier League in blue rather than red.

Caicedo concern adds urgency

The pressure on Chelsea’s midfield options tightened even further on Sunday when Moises Caicedo limped off. The Ecuadorian, signed for £115m to be one of the pillars of this new era, is already a doubt and any absence would leave Alonso dangerously short of senior, specialist midfielders.

Lavia remains young and still adapting. James and Palmer are versatile but not natural central midfielders over a long stretch of games. The schedule will only intensify.
