Chelsea Signs Pep Chavarria and Stands Firm on Enzo Fernandez

Chelsea have tied down their latest left-sided weapon and drawn a hard line in the sand over Enzo Fernandez on the same day. One deal is done. The other will only happen on their terms.

Chavarria arrives as Alonso’s left flank specialist

Pep Chavarria is officially a Chelsea player. The club confirmed the signing of the Rayo Vallecano defender on Wednesday morning, announcing a deal worth €19m plus €2m in add-ons and a contract running until 2031.

At 28, Chavarria is not a typical long-term “project” buy. He is a ready-made, attack-minded option for a role that has been glaringly obvious since Marc Cucurella left for Real Madrid. With Xabi Alonso expected to lean heavily on a back five at times, Chelsea now have Marco Palestra for the right and Chavarria for the left.

The club statement underlined that the Spaniard will join up with his new team-mates at Cobham as preparations ramp up for the 2026/27 campaign. The message was clear: this is a signing with a defined tactical purpose, not a speculative punt.

Chelsea’s wing-back picture suddenly looks sharper. And that is where the certainty ends.

Enzo, Maresca and a £120m standoff

While Chavarria settles in, the noise around Enzo Fernandez grows louder.

Inside Stamford Bridge, the question is simple: does the World Cup winner have a long-term future in west London? The answer is complicated by one number – £120m. Chelsea are prepared to sell if that fixed fee is met. They are not, at this stage, pushing him towards the door.

Manchester City have entered the conversation. Enzo Maresca, who worked with Fernandez at Chelsea before leaving for the Etihad earlier this year, is driving that interest. City have already moved for Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille as they plan for life after Rodri, who is bound for Barcelona, but Maresca wants another major midfielder. His preferred name has not changed: Enzo Fernandez.

Fabrizio Romano reported that City recently made contact with Fernandez’s agent, Javier Pastore, to register that admiration. These were exploratory talks, not a formal bid, but they lit the fuse on a saga that could define the final weeks of the window.

Ben Jacobs has suggested Chelsea might soften their stance later in August, hinting the £120m valuation might not hold once the season kicks off and the window ticks towards its close. The idea is that the club would want their first-team squad settled by the time they face Fulham on 24 August, which could create a brief window for compromise.

Chelsea sources, via Romano, are pushing back hard on that idea.

Chelsea dig in: ‘take it or leave it’

Romano’s line is blunt. Chelsea feel “very relaxed” about Fernandez’s situation. They are “more than happy” to keep him and believe he can become a key figure under Alonso, especially with the club convinced that recent issues came from the wider environment around the squad rather than the player himself.

From their side, the stance is fixed: £120m, as a straight fee, no discounts, no reliance on add-ons. City are not expected to go that high, and are instead hoping Chelsea blink and open the door to negotiation.

Chelsea, according to Romano, have no intention of blinking.

The London club also have long memories. Maresca’s departure from Stamford Bridge and rapid appointment at City has left tension between the two clubs. That backdrop matters. If Chelsea are to strengthen a direct rival and hand Maresca his preferred midfielder, they want to be paid in full. No favours, no cut-price deals.

Romano has framed the next few days as decisive. Chelsea do not want this dragging into the final stretch of the window. They want clarity. Either City meet the £120m valuation quickly, or Fernandez stays and the subject is closed. In his words, the message to City is effectively “take it or leave it” – and forget about a late-window scramble.

Chelsea believe Alonso can unlock another level in Fernandez’s game. City believe Maresca can do the same in Manchester. One manager will get that chance. The other will have to look elsewhere.
