Chelsea's Pursuit of Manu Koné Continues Despite Setback

The French midfielder was one of the names that refused to leave the headlines in the frantic final hours of the summer market, as Chelsea pushed hard to lure him to London and opened talks with Roma.

The move looked alive. Then Gian Piero Gasperini stepped in.

Roma’s coach dug his heels in and blocked the deal, viewing Koné as a cornerstone of his project. His veto effectively killed Chelsea’s late push and kept the 23-year-old in the Italian capital, shutting the door on a Premier League switch – for now.

That resistance from the bench proved decisive. Chelsea had identified Koné as a key target for their midfield rebuild, but ran straight into a manager unwilling to lose a player he considers central to Roma’s balance and intensity.

The story, though, is far from closed.

Sport.FR in France reports that Chelsea remain firmly interested and are already eyeing the winter window as their next opening to strike. The London club’s admiration has not cooled with the passing of deadline day; if anything, it has simply been delayed.

For the moment, Koné stays at Trigoria, with Gasperini holding tight to one of his prized assets. But January is not far away, and if Chelsea come knocking again, how long can Roma – and their coach – keep the door bolted?
