Berge on the list, but Fulham shut the door

Among the late options explored was Fulham’s Sander Berge. Chelsea looked at the Norway international in the closing stages of the window as they scrambled for cover in the middle of the pitch.

The interest never became a formal bid. Fulham had already made their stance clear: Berge, 28, was not for sale.

Since joining from Burnley in 2023, he has grown into a central figure at Craven Cottage, racking up 78 appearances and anchoring Marco Silva’s midfield. Fulham were not about to weaken themselves for a rival’s convenience.

So Chelsea moved on.

Camara deal collapses at the last moment

Deadline day dragged them in other directions. Attention swung to Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara and Roma’s Manu Kone as the clock wound down.

Chelsea believed they had secured Camara. A £47m agreement was thought to be in place in the final hours. Then, chaos. The deal collapsed just minutes before the deadline, leaving the club exposed in the very area they had been trying to reinforce.

Kone remained another name on the list rather than a signing. The window slammed shut with Chelsea lighter by one World Cup winner and no new body in midfield.

Garner links denied, Moyes pushes back

There was more noise around Everton’s James Garner. Reports suggested Chelsea made an approach for the midfielder on deadline day, adding another twist to an already frantic finale.

David Moyes, though, has dismissed that talk. The Everton manager has refuted claims of a Chelsea move for Garner, underlining how messy and speculative those final hours became.

What is not in doubt is Chelsea’s intent. They wanted a central midfielder. They ended up with a gap.

January already looming large

That failure has pushed the problem down the line. A new central midfielder is now expected to be a major priority in the January window, with Bournemouth’s Alex Scott among the long-term targets under consideration.

The need was brutally exposed on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium. In the loss to Arsenal, Xabi Alonso finished the match with two right-backs, Reece James and Malo Gusto, operating in central midfield. It looked improvised because it was.

This is not a squad built with enough depth in the middle of the pitch. Not yet.

There is at least a short-term boost in sight. Chelsea hope Moises Caicedo, who missed the defeat to Arsenal through injury, will be fit to return for Saturday’s home game against Hull (15:00 BST).

His comeback would steady things for now. But the real question hangs over January: after one chaotic window and a £125m exit, can Chelsea finally land the midfielder they so clearly need?
