Chelsea Accelerates Manager Search: Iraola, Alonso, Silva on Shortlist

Chelsea have begun making formal approaches to prospective head coaches as the club accelerates its search for a permanent successor to Liam Rosenior, aiming to have a new man in place well before pre-season begins in early July.

The shortlist is taking shape. Andoni Iraola, Xabi Alonso and Marco Silva are among the leading names under consideration, while Crystal Palace head coach Oliver Glasner is also firmly in Chelsea’s thinking as the hierarchy weighs up its next move.

There is a clear pattern to the candidates being targeted. Iraola, Alonso, Silva and Glasner are all either currently out of work or due to be free of club commitments by the end of the season, meaning Chelsea can avoid a compensation battle and move quickly once they settle on their preferred option.

Glasner will leave Crystal Palace when his contract expires this summer and is understood to be open to remaining in England, keeping him squarely on the radar of clubs looking for a tactically astute, Premier League-ready coach.

Iraola, meanwhile, has already confirmed he will depart Bournemouth at the end of the season. Palace have made him their first-choice replacement for Glasner and have held extensive talks with the Spaniard as they attempt to secure continuity in the dugout.

The pressure, though, is not only coming from Selhurst Park. Chelsea’s interest has complicated the picture and Iraola is taking his time to weigh up his next step. Sources indicate the 43-year-old is even prepared to start next season without a club, keeping himself free for any high-profile vacancy that may emerge mid-campaign.

Silva’s situation adds another layer to the managerial carousel. His contract at Fulham expires this summer, and the club have put a three-year offer on the table in an effort to keep him at Craven Cottage. The Portuguese coach is reported to have options abroad, while teams in Saudi Arabia are also understood to be keen if he chooses to walk away from the Premier League.

Chelsea are not limiting their gaze to current top-flight bosses. Former Flamengo head coach Filipe Luis and Como manager Cesc Fabregas, both ex-Chelsea players, have admirers within the club. Their inclusion underlines the appeal of candidates who understand the unique demands and culture at Stamford Bridge, even if they lack the extensive Premier League managerial track record of others on the list.

The clock is ticking. Pre-season is looming, the squad needs clarity, and the club’s next head coach will inherit not just a team, but a project that demands immediate authority. Who dares to take it on?
