Chelsea and Liverpool Eye Mamadou Camara After Failed Transfer

Chelsea thought they had their Enzo Fernández replacement lined up. Monaco had other ideas.

As the summer window ticked into its final frantic hours, the London club pushed hard for Mamadou Camara, identifying the 22-year-old as their priority target and agreeing a £47 million fee. Xabi Alonso was expecting his new midfielder. The plan was drawn. The hole in Chelsea’s midfield finally had a name.

Then Monaco walked away.

Right at the deadline, the Ligue 1 leaders abruptly pulled the plug, leaving Chelsea short in the middle of the pitch and Camara still in the principality. The move that was supposed to launch his Premier League career vanished in a phone call.

Camara’s response? He played.

Since that collapsed transfer, the Senegal international has nailed down his place in Monaco’s starting XI. He has not missed a minute of their opening Europa Conference League campaign, scoring in a 3-2 win over Gornik Zabrze, and he has featured in all five Ligue 1 fixtures as Monaco climbed to the top of the table. The setback has turned into a platform.

Inside the dressing room, his teammates see it the same way. After a recent win over Lens, Denis Zakaria admitted he had actively tried to steer Camara away from Stamford Bridge, drawing on his own bruising loan spell in west London.

“Chelsea? I told him that it was good but that it is better here,” Zakaria told reporters. He praised Camara’s professionalism and suggested the failed move had hardened his mentality. “I think that [the transfer saga] has given him even more strength. He was incredible today.”

Camara, for his part, has chosen calm over drama. Speaking before a draw with Strasbourg, he made it clear he has already processed what might have been.

“There was a possibility I could leave,” he said. “It didn’t go through at the last minute and that’s part of football. I’ve turned the page and am focusing on the season. I can help the team a lot. Football moves fast. Maybe other opportunities will come along. But for now, I’m staying focused on the season with Monaco.”

Those opportunities are already queuing up.

Chelsea have not walked away from the deal. With Enzo Fernández gone and the midfield still missing a key piece, the club intend to return when the market reopens in January. Transfer specialist Gianluca Di Marzio has no doubt they will be back at Monaco’s door.

“Will Chelsea renew their interest in Camara? I think so because everything changed for Camara at the last minute,” Di Marzio said. “Chelsea needs a player in that position after Enzo left, so I think that in January, they will try again. Obviously, it’s difficult to say right now if something will be arranged or not. Chelsea will be coming back again.”

This time, though, they may not be alone.

Liverpool have joined the watch. According to Di Marzio, the Merseyside club are monitoring Camara as they weigh up the contract situation of Alexis Mac Allister and look to reinforce their midfield before next summer. What began as a straight line between Monaco and Chelsea is starting to look like a full Premier League tug-of-war.

Monaco know what is coming. Top of Ligue 1, with a young midfielder growing in stature every week, they are braced for a wave of offers in the winter window. Every strong performance from Camara in the league or in Europe only pushes his valuation higher.

For Chelsea, he represents a key piece in Alonso’s rebuild. For Liverpool, he offers insurance and energy in an area that could soon need reshaping. For Monaco, he is both a crucial starter and a rapidly appreciating asset.

For Camara himself, the task is simpler and harder at the same time: shut out the noise, keep running games from midfield, and let the rest of Europe argue over who moves first in January.
