Chelsea Reject Leeds' Mudryk Loan Offer as Winger Eyes Premier League Return

Chelsea have turned down an opening season-long loan offer from Leeds United for winger Mykhailo Mudryk, but the door to a deal is very much still open.

The proposal from Elland Road fell well short of Chelsea’s demands, with the London club unimpressed by the initial financial terms. Talks have not collapsed, though. Negotiations are ongoing, and the Ukraine international is understood to be keen on the move.

Mudryk, now 25, has already accepted that he needs a year away from Stamford Bridge to relaunch a stalled career and rebuild full match fitness. His story over the last two years has been anything but straightforward.

The winger spent 20 months out of the game after testing positive for the banned substance meldonium, a suspension that ripped the momentum out of a career that once made him one of Europe’s most talked-about young wide players. His ban ended in July, and since then Chelsea have been trying to piece him back together.

Under new manager Xabi Alonso, Mudryk has featured on the club’s pre-season tour, making several appearances from the bench as he edges back towards sharpness. Those outings have been more about rhythm than headlines, but they have been enough to convince clubs that he is ready for a proper competitive run.

Crucially, Mudryk has made it clear in recent discussions that he wants to stay in the Premier League if he leaves this summer. Offers and interest have arrived from elsewhere: Strasbourg, part of the same BlueCo ownership group as Chelsea, have been in the frame, while clubs in Italy have also explored the possibility of a deal. None of that appeals to him as much as another crack at English football.

That is where Leeds have stolen a march. The Yorkshire club are prepared to take Mudryk on loan without any option to buy, a key point for Chelsea, who want to retain full control over his long-term future while shifting his wages for the season. For Chelsea, it is a way to protect a major asset; for Leeds, it is a chance to add top-level pace and directness to their attack without a huge transfer outlay.

Leeds have already been busy this summer. Harry Wilson has arrived from Fulham to bolster the frontline, Tarik Muharemovic has come in from Sassuolo at centre-back, James Trafford has joined from Manchester City to compete in goal, and Nico Elvedi has been signed from Borussia Monchengladbach to strengthen the defence. Mudryk would be the statement wide addition in that rebuild.

They had previously looked at Chelsea striker Liam Delap, but that interest has cooled, clearing the way to focus on the Ukrainian winger.

Leeds are not alone in the chase. Brentford, long-term admirers of Mudryk, remain interested. The Bees tried to sign him in the months before Chelsea finally secured his signature from Shakhtar Donetsk for an initial £61m in 2023 and saw this window as a chance to revisit that pursuit. Their plan, though, hinged on inserting an option to make the move permanent. Chelsea rejected that idea, unwilling to lock in a potential cut-price exit.

Coventry City have also registered their interest, sensing an opportunity if negotiations with top-flight clubs stall. A move to Strasbourg is still on the table as part of Chelsea’s wider strategy with their sister club, where they are also weighing up sending other players, including midfielder Dario Essugo.

All the while, the prospect of Mudryk simply staying put at Stamford Bridge lingers in the background. Those inside the club view that scenario as unlikely, but it has not been completely dismissed. If the right loan cannot be found, Chelsea may yet decide to keep him in Alonso’s squad and continue his rehabilitation in-house.

For now, the situation is clear. Leeds have made their move and been rebuffed once. Chelsea want better terms. Mudryk wants minutes in the Premier League.

Something has to give.
