Chelsea Eye Late Move for Marcus Rashford Before Transfer Deadline

Chelsea have explored the prospect of launching a late move for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford before the transfer deadline, according to reports – a potential raid that would add another jolt to an already wild summer at Stamford Bridge.

Xabi Alonso’s first window in charge has been anything but cautious. Chelsea have blown past the £300m mark on new signings, headlined by Morgan Rogers, who arrived as the most expensive British player in history. The club have also sunk serious money into Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra and Valentin Barco, then layered experience on top with former England internationals Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson.

The early signs on the pitch were chaotic and compelling. Chelsea opened their Premier League campaign with a breathless 3-2 win over west London neighbours Fulham on Monday night, a result that underlined both their attacking firepower and their ongoing need to refine the squad.

Outgoings first – but one more attacker on the radar

Behind the scenes, the mood has shifted towards trimming numbers. Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap are both expected to be sold, while the hierarchy are ready to listen to offers for Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto. Enzo Fernandez remains a major storyline too: Manchester City continue to be linked, but Chelsea are standing firm on a price of at least £120m for the Argentine midfielder.

Even as they look to cash in on several players, Chelsea have left the door open for one more attacking arrival before the window shuts next week. That is where Rashford comes in.

According to The Independent, the London club are weighing up a late swoop for the Manchester United and England forward, viewing him as a versatile option across the front line.

Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona and pushed for a permanent switch to Camp Nou, only to be sent back to Old Trafford when no agreement materialised. United were initially thought to be open to moving him on, but Michael Carrick’s public stance has been that the 28-year-old remains part of his plans.

“He’s our player, you know, and he’s come back great. He’s just like any other player,” Carrick told ITV1 during pre-season. “I’ve known Marcus a long time and, you know, he gives us something a little bit different. And he’s been in great spirits since he’s been back.

“He’s been back two or three days training and it’s just pretty normal, to be honest. And we’re looking forward to the start of the season.”

Carrick turned to Rashford from the bench in United’s Premier League opener away to Hull City on Saturday, introducing him at half-time. It did little to change the outcome. United slumped to a shock 2-0 defeat, raising fresh questions about the balance of their attack and Rashford’s role within it.

Across a decade in the first team, the England World Cup star has racked up more than 400 appearances for his boyhood club. Now, with his 30th birthday on the horizon, he stands at a career crossroads.

Townsend: “These next couple of years for Marcus are big”

At Stamford Bridge, not everyone would see his arrival as a gamble. Former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend believes Rashford would immediately raise the level of Alonso’s attacking options, especially after the club allowed Alejandro Garnacho to leave on loan for Aston Villa.

“I think Marcus Rashford improves Chelsea’s squad, he is an improvement on Alejandro Garnacho, that’s for sure,” Townsend told CasinoHawks.

“The number we were talking about was £35m. I’m very surprised that no one has come to get him for that money, even if he’s 28.

“Wide strikers are asked to produce a lot of output nowadays, and there aren’t many operating in the top flight at thirty-two or thirty-three. So these next couple of years for Marcus are big. It has to be the right move.”

The stumbling block is obvious. Wages.

“He’s on massive wages, which is an issue for any club, but you’d think he could get that to a level everyone finds acceptable. A club like Chelsea might suit him,” Townsend said.

“I could see that. I like Pedro Neto, but he sometimes flatters to deceive. Garnacho is far too inconsistent, like Jadon Sancho, those sorts of players are difficult to accommodate.

“Rashford showed at Barcelona that he can play at a big club, he understands that mentality.

“At £35m, I’d be surprised if a deal doesn’t get done, depending on his salary demands. If he wants to stick on £300,000-a-week, then he’s going to have a problem.

“But there’s no point in going back to Manchester United and not playing at his age. That doesn’t send a great image to potential suitors if he’s happy to just sit on the bench.

“Marcus and his team should be working around the clock to find the right environment for him at the right level, wage-wise. You want to play.

“At nearly 29, he’s in his peak, and he needs to be out there more often than not.”

Chelsea’s recruitment drive has already ripped up the script of this window. If they now prise Rashford away from Old Trafford for a cut-price fee, it will not just reshape Alonso’s attack – it will throw a fresh spotlight on United’s direction and on a player running out of time to make his prime years truly count.
