Chelsea's Interest in Ahanor as Atalanta Holds Firm

Chelsea have begun exploratory talks with Atalanta over highly rated Italy defender Honest Ahanor, testing the resolve of a club that has already turned away serious money for the teenager.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the London side have opened a first channel of communication both with Atalanta and with the player’s entourage, as they weigh up a move for one of Serie A’s standout young defenders.

Atalanta, though, are not exactly in selling mode.

Earlier in the summer, the Bergamo club rejected a €34m bid from Brighton for Ahanor. Sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli, who arrived for his first season in charge, made it clear in July that Atalanta would not cash in on their best and most promising players, explicitly including the 18-year-old in that group.

Ahanor only joined Atalanta in 2025, arriving from Genoa in a €16m deal, but has climbed the internal hierarchy at speed. Comfortable as a left wing-back or on the left of a back three, he offers the kind of tactical flexibility modern clubs pay a premium for, especially those who rotate between systems as often as Chelsea.

His rise has been quick and public. Ahanor has already made 28 Serie A appearances and stepped onto the international stage in June, earning his first senior Italy cap under caretaker coach Silvio Baldini.

That trajectory explains the hard line from Bergamo. Giuntoli has just started his project at Atalanta alongside new coach Maurizio Sarri, with the pair reunited after their spell together at Napoli. Letting go of a cornerstone talent before the new cycle has truly begun would cut against everything they have said this summer.

Chelsea, though, know the route. The two clubs have already done significant business in this window, with Marco Palestra swapping the Gewiss Stadium for Stamford Bridge in a €60m move. That deal proved Atalanta will sell at the right price and with the right timing.

Now the question is simple: will they consider Ahanor in the same bracket, or is this the defender they refuse to lose, no matter how high Chelsea push the bid?
