Chelsea's Goalkeeping Dilemma: Emiliano Martínez Opportunity

Chelsea have been handed the chance to solve their goalkeeping dilemma in the most dramatic way possible: by signing World Cup winner Emiliano Martínez.

A source confirmed to ESPN's Mark Ogden that representatives of the Aston Villa goalkeeper have offered him to Chelsea, with Villa now ready to move on from the Argentina international after reshaping their plans in goal.

Villa move on from Martínez

Villa’s stance has hardened since the arrival of Japan international Zion Suzuki, whom they see as their long-term No. 1. With that decision made, Martínez has shifted from cornerstone to saleable asset.

A move to Juventus earlier this month was supposed to be his next step. That deal collapsed, and the 31-year-old was left out of the squad for Villa’s bruising 4-0 defeat to Brighton on the Premier League’s opening weekend.

Villa, who signed Martínez from Arsenal for £17 million ($23m) in 2020, are open to a transfer as they try to lower the average age of their squad and ease financial pressure. Their need to generate funds has been clear all summer: Morgan Rogers has already joined Chelsea for £117m ($159m), while Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne have also gone as the club work to stay within UEFA and Premier League financial rules.

Now, Martínez is the next big name on the table.

Chelsea’s goalkeeper question

At Stamford Bridge, the timing is no coincidence. Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation has been dragged back under the spotlight after Robert Sánchez’s latest error in Monday’s 3-2 win over Fulham, when he allowed a tame Josh King effort to slip through him.

That moment has sharpened the debate inside the club. A source confirmed Chelsea are weighing up whether to move for Martínez before the transfer window closes, with the option of an experienced, title-tested goalkeeper suddenly available.

The plan had been more patient. Chelsea hoped 21-year-old Belgian Mike Penders, who spent last season on loan at Strasbourg, would grow into a genuine challenger for Sánchez. Penders could make his first-team debut against Luton in the Carabao Cup on Thursday, a game that was supposed to be part of his gradual elevation.

But the chance to bring in a proven Premier League goalkeeper and a seasoned international changes the equation for a club that wants to fight for the title now, not later.

Martínez was a central figure in Argentina’s World Cup triumph in 2022 and part of the side that finished runners-up to Spain at this summer’s tournament. His pedigree is not in doubt.

Sánchez’s status, by contrast, has been fragile for some time. Successive Chelsea managers have lost faith. Mauricio Pochettino dropped him as first choice in 2024, turning instead to relatively untested Serbia international Djordje Petrovic. Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior have also benched Sánchez at various points in response to poor form.

The pressure is building again. And this time, there is a World Cup winner waiting in the wings.

Alonso stands firm on Enzo

While one Argentina international could be on the move, Chelsea are fighting to keep another.

Xabi Alonso insisted on Wednesday that he expects Enzo Fernández to be involved against Luton despite the constant noise around the midfielder’s future. Chelsea value Fernández at £120m ($163m), and he has been consistently linked with a move to Manchester City.

“Yes we expect that he's involved. He's training really well and he is a good professional,” Alonso said at his news conference.

Asked whether he wants the 25-year-old to stay, Alonso did not hesitate: “We want to have the best team possible. We know Enzo and his qualities. He has shown it and we have to wait. We'll think about tomorrow and let's see how things develop.”

Alonso also confirmed that Moisés Caicedo and Marco Palestra remain out injured, but Cole Palmer has been passed fit.
