The agreement appeared settled after Chelsea and Monaco settled on the €55 million fee. Monaco only agreed after financial pressure mounted following complications in the proposed £40 million transfer of Folarin Balogun to Everton. This urgent need for funds opened a window for Chelsea to swoop in for Camara at a reduced price.

Despite having a written agreement between clubs, Monaco suddenly withdrew from the deal. Everton later renegotiated Balogun's move on lower terms, relieving Monaco’s financial strain. Yet, Balogun then declined the Everton transfer after the deadline, leaving him in France and Chelsea without their target, as reported by talkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs.

Chelsea Reacts with Anger to Monaco’s U-Turn

Sources say Chelsea are furious about Monaco’s last-minute reversal, viewing it as unprofessional. Chelsea could have canceled their £125 million sale of Fernandez to Manchester City in response but chose to honor their commitment instead.

Monaco reportedly pulled out because they believe Camara could fetch a higher fee of around €70 million later on. This confidence was boosted by interest from Liverpool, though no direct interference in Chelsea’s talks occurred, according to Jacobs.

Midfield Crisis Hits Chelsea

Xabi Alonso now faces a tough challenge managing a depleted midfield. Chelsea sold Fernandez without securing a replacement and briefly considered signing Manu Kone, but Roma’s coach blocked that move.

The shortage was clear during Chelsea’s chaotic 4-3 win over Brighton. Moises Caicedo got injured after coming off the bench, adding to veteran Jordan Henderson’s ongoing absence. Meanwhile, Romeo Lavia has just returned from injury disruptions, and summer signing Valentin Barco lacks experience.

Due to these problems, Alonso had to use full-backs Reece James and Malo Gusto as central midfielders just to cover the gaps.
