Chelsea sets £120m deadline for Enzo Fernandez amid City midfield reshuffle

The clock is already ticking on one of the window’s most intriguing storylines. Chelsea have told Manchester City they have until 5pm today to put their money where their admiration is for Enzo Fernandez – and it will take all of £120m.

City had hoped to talk that figure down. Chelsea, still bristling after Enzo Maresca’s move to the Etihad and the £17m compensation that followed, are in no mood to haggle. The message from Stamford Bridge is blunt: meet the valuation on time or walk away.

At the same time, City’s midfield is being pulled in three directions.

Rodri pressure from Barcelona, Reijnders heading out

Barcelona are pushing hard for Rodri. Sky Sports News say City have already turned down a second offer of £55m for the World Cup winner, with talks continuing as the Catalans test just how open the Premier League champions really are to losing the heartbeat of their side.

Behind him, the reshaping has already started. City have agreed a £51m deal with Al Qadsiah for Tijjani Reijnders, just a year after signing him from AC Milan for £46.5m. The Dutchman has accepted personal terms and is set to leave the Etihad after a single season, a swift flip that will help fund City’s wider overhaul.

With Nathan Ake heading to Fenerbahce and James Trafford bound for Leeds, City are on course to bank around £100m in fees this window. They are also in pole position to land Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi, one of the World Cup’s breakout names, as they look to refresh while staying on top.

All of that makes the Enzo deadline feel even sharper. Lose Rodri, sell Reijnders, and fail to land Fernandez? That is a midfield equation City do not want to face.

Spurs closing on Savinho as De Zerbi rebuild gathers pace

While City juggle ins and outs, Tottenham are pushing hard on one of their own targets from the Etihad. Spurs are “moving in the right direction” to sign Savinho, with The Independent’s Miguel Delaney reporting progress towards a £65m deal plus add-ons for the 22-year-old Brazilian winger.

Savinho joined City from Troyes for just over £30m in 2024 and has quickly become a major asset. Now he is at the centre of Roberto De Zerbi’s aggressive rebuild at Spurs.

The north London club have already had a frantic summer, bringing in Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Martin Dubravka and Cole Ramsey. Only Chelsea have spent more in this window. Adding Savinho would underline how radically De Zerbi intends to reshape the squad in his image.

Across town, Tottenham are also involved in one of the day’s other big moves. Atletico Madrid have agreed a deal in principle to sign Cristian Romero for around £34.2m plus add-ons, with a 15 per cent sell-on clause included. Inter Milan had shown interest, but Atletico have moved decisively as they also close in on Djed Spence.

Arsenal weigh Martinelli sale and Osimhen opportunity

At Arsenal, the window is starting to twist in unexpected ways. Mikel Arteta has been clear that the club’s business is not done, and now one of his key attackers is firmly in the shop window.

Galatasaray have lodged a £38.5m bid for Gabriel Martinelli, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, with the 25-year-old Brazil winger at the top of the Turkish champions’ list. Arsenal have already signed Christos Tzolis on the flank and have been linked with Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez and PSG’s Bradley Barcola.

The Martinelli talks have opened the door to a much bigger name. The Telegraph report that Victor Osimhen’s availability has been raised in discussions between Arsenal and Galatasaray. It is not yet clear whether Arsenal are actively driving a move or whether the striker has been proposed to them as part of a package.

One scenario being floated would see Osimhen included in a deal for Martinelli, with a reduced fee going to Arsenal. For a club openly in the market for a new attacker, the idea of flipping a winger for one of Europe’s most feared No 9s will be hard to ignore.

Liverpool bide their time on Barcola as PSG keep cards close

Bradley Barcola sits near the top of more than one English shortlist. Arsenal like him. Liverpool, though, have made him a priority.

GiveMeSport’s Ben Jacobs reports that if PSG bring in one or more attackers before the window shuts, Liverpool expect the French champions to soften their stance and accept less than the current €170m (£145m) price tag.

Liverpool are prepared to wait, hoping the market squeezes the fee down. That stance has already seen them cool on another PSG target, Ibrahim Mbaye, with the combined cost of both players deemed too heavy.

PSG have moved to strengthen elsewhere, paying €50m to Monaco for midfielder Maghnes Akliouche. Any willingness to cash in on Barcola, though, will depend on whether they secure a winger or striker in the coming weeks.

For now, the official line in Paris remains cautious. Manager Luis Enrique refused to be drawn on Barcola’s future ahead of Wednesday’s Super Cup clash with Aston Villa in Salzburg.

“I don’t know and I don’t want to speak about any player individually,” he said when asked about the 23-year-old, who scored three times for France at the World Cup and only returned to training last Monday. “Because it’s always dangerous when you are asking something positive or negative about a player. I stay focused on my team.”

PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi struck a similarly guarded note, saying: “We’re working calmly, we don’t talk too much. I can’t say whether he will leave or not. Today, he is a PSG player. We’ll see.”

Liverpool, watching closely, are happy to let that uncertainty work in their favour.

A deadline, a domino, and a day that could change the window

So it comes back to that 5pm line in the sand at Stamford Bridge.

City want Enzo Fernandez as insurance, and potentially as evolution, if Barcelona prise Rodri away. Chelsea want full value and a show of strength after a year of upheaval. Arsenal are flirting with the idea of turning Gabriel Martinelli into Victor Osimhen. Liverpool are circling Barcola, waiting for PSG to blink. Spurs are ripping up their squad and starting again.

One decision on Enzo could tilt all of it. Does City pay the premium and lock down their midfield, or hold firm and risk a scramble if Rodri finally says yes to Barcelona?
