Chelsea Eye Move for Emiliano Martinez Amid Goalkeeper Concerns

Chelsea are weighing up a move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez after opening talks with the Argentina international’s camp, as doubts grow over their current number one.

Martinez, 33, is regarded as available at Villa Park following the club’s £30m capture of Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma earlier this month. Suzuki’s arrival has shifted the goalkeeping hierarchy and opened the door for one of the Premier League’s most aggressive operators in the market.

Chelsea and Villa’s transfer pipeline

If Chelsea push ahead, it would be the latest chapter in an increasingly busy trade route between Stamford Bridge and Villa Park.

The London club smashed their transfer record to sign forward Morgan Rogers from Villa for £117m, while Alejandro Garnacho headed in the opposite direction on an initial loan. Striker Nicolas Jackson, valued at around £65m, is another name on the table and could yet reunite with his former Villarreal manager Unai Emery at Villa.

The two clubs have already shown how closely they work together. They were central to a deal widely labelled a “PSR swap”, with defender Ian Maatsen joining Villa and Omari Kellyman – now at Strasbourg – moving to Chelsea. A move for Martinez would simply extend a pattern that has become one of the defining transfer relationships in the league.

Juventus move collapses, door opens for Chelsea

Chelsea are not alone in having tracked Martinez. Juventus tried to bring him to Turin earlier in the window, only for that deal to fall apart over concerns about a finger injury. The Italian side quickly pivoted, taking Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario on loan instead.

That collapse has left Martinez still in Birmingham and still on the market, with Chelsea now exploring whether he could be the solution to a problem that has flared up just one game into the new Premier League season.

Sanchez under scrutiny

Robert Sanchez began the campaign as Chelsea’s undisputed number one. His performance at Craven Cottage has altered the mood.

In the opening league match against Fulham, Sanchez was beaten at his near post by Josh King’s angled strike, a goal that immediately raised questions. Later in the game he spilled another effort into a dangerous area, allowing Gonzalo Garcia to score. Chelsea escaped with a 3-2 win, but the damage to confidence was done.

Manager Xavi Alonso moved quickly to shield his goalkeeper in the aftermath, insisting the focus remained on collective improvement rather than individual errors. Speaking again before Thursday night’s Carabao Cup tie against Luton Town at Stamford Bridge, Alonso kept the same line.

“No, (we have had) normal conversations,” he said when asked if Sanchez’s display had prompted specific talks. “We have talked more about the team thing, about what we did well and what we have to do better.

“It was more about understanding the context. Every game is going to be important because we are in this process that we still need to develop things, we need to make adjustments that are more team-related.”

The words were calm. The transfer noise around Martinez is anything but.

Penders waits, Martinez looms

Behind Sanchez, Mike Penders has quietly moved into position. The 24-year-old returned in the summer from a strong loan spell at Strasbourg and is pushing for minutes. He could start against Luton, with Alonso confirming he is firmly in contention.

“He’s in the squad, so he has an opportunity,” the Chelsea manager said. “We will decide and give the team to the players tomorrow, so I prefer to expect that they know first.”

Penders is the internal option. Martinez would be the statement signing: a World Cup winner, a proven Premier League presence, and a goalkeeper whose personality dominates a penalty area.

Chelsea now stand at a familiar crossroads. Back the project from within, or lean once more on the transfer market and test that increasingly lucrative line to Villa Park.
