Chelsea set £50m price for Delap's potential exit

Chelsea are ready to cash in on Delap just a year after bringing him to Stamford Bridge, with the club placing a £50 million valuation on the striker as they trim a crowded squad ahead of the new season.

The Blues triggered a £30m release clause to sign Delap from Ipswich Town only 12 months ago, but senior figures are now prepared to move him on if that price is met. Interest is already circling in the Premier League, with Everton and Nottingham Forest tracking the situation closely as they assess their own attacking options.

It has been a bruising first year in west London for the forward. Delap managed only two goals in all competitions during a campaign that saw Chelsea miss out on European qualification and fall to Manchester City in the FA Cup final. For a player signed with clear expectations, the return has been underwhelming.

Pre-season has done little to change the picture. Delap has struggled to convince new head coach Xabi Alonso that he should be central to Chelsea’s plans, and his muted impact in warm-up games has only intensified questions over his long-term role. With the transfer window ticking towards the September 1 deadline, his name now sits high on the list of potential departures.

Alonso's Reshuffle

Alonso is actively reshaping his forward line, and Delap finds himself at the heart of that reshuffle. The club’s attacking department is bloated, with Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu also drawing attention from elsewhere for both loan and permanent moves. Chelsea’s hierarchy want clarity and balance in a unit that has too often looked experimental rather than elite.

Everton, in particular, have been flagged as a logical landing spot. Former Toffees scout Bryan King has previously argued that Goodison Park could be the ideal stage for Delap, pointing to Romelu Lukaku’s transformative loan spell on Merseyside as a blueprint. Lukaku, King noted, “went on loan and really made his name up at Everton” – a path Delap could attempt to mirror if a deal can be struck.

For now, Chelsea’s stance is clear: a permanent transfer is the preferred outcome if a club steps up with the full £50m fee. That figure would represent a swift profit on last summer’s outlay and help fund the wider overhaul taking place across the squad.

And it is not only the forward line under review. Negotiations are ongoing over exits for defenders Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi, while Benfica are monitoring Tosin Adarabioyo. The club are also weighing up loan moves for youngsters Mamadou Sarr and Aaron Anselmino, keen to avoid blocking pathways while still protecting their long-term value.

The clock is now very real for Alonso. He must settle on the shape and size of his group before the window shuts on September 1, knowing that any indecision could leave him with frustrated players and an unbalanced dressing room.

For Delap, the stakes are stark. Either he secures a move that offers regular football and a chance to rebuild his reputation, or he risks slipping into a secondary role at Chelsea just as the new Premier League season roars into life.
