Chelsea's Defensive Shake-Up: Pre-Season Shirt Numbers Raise Questions

Chelsea’s final pre-season outing of the summer delivered a 3-1 win over Real Sociedad – and a loud hint about who might be on their way out of Stamford Bridge.

On the pitch, Joao Pedro helped himself to a brace and £116million signing Morgan Rogers marked his debut with a goal, offering a glimpse of the attacking firepower planned for 2026-27. Enzo Fernandez stepped back into competitive action as a second-half substitute, taking the captain’s armband from Reece James and drawing a mixed reaction from the home crowd as he did so.

But the real intrigue came from the numbers on the backs of Chelsea’s defenders.

Numbers tell a different story

New signing Maxence Lacroix ran out wearing No5 – a shirt currently registered to Benoit Badiashile. Pep Chavarria, another summer arrival, took No29, long associated with Wesley Fofana.

Fofana himself did feature, but in No3, recently vacated when Marc Cucurella left for Real Madrid. The reshuffle did not stop there. Valentin Barco, an unused substitute, was listed as No4, the number Tosin Adarabioyo has worn throughout Chelsea’s pre-season schedule.

Badiashile and Adarabioyo were nowhere to be seen in the matchday squad. That absence is no coincidence. Standard Sport understands both are among the players Chelsea expect to move on before the transfer window closes.

Adarabioyo already has admirers. Benfica and several other top-flight clubs are monitoring his situation. Chelsea, for their part, have agreed a loan deal with Napoli for Badiashile, which includes an option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.

The message felt clear: the hierarchy in Mauricio Pochettino’s defensive ranks is shifting, and some of last season’s names are sliding off the board.

Club urges caution on early clues

Chelsea have, however, tried to dampen any rush to judgement. At the start of the month, the club issued a reminder that pre-season numbers do not necessarily reflect the final squad list for 2026-27.

“Supporters should note that during pre-season, the shirt numbers worn by all players may not be representative of their finalised squad numbers for the 2026/27 campaign,” read a statement on the club’s official website. “Further detail on this will be provided in due course.”

So, officially, Badiashile and Adarabioyo have not yet been stripped of their numbers. Unofficially, the sight of Lacroix in No5 and Barco in No4, with both incumbents out of the squad and linked with exits, paints a very different picture.

Pre-season is over, the real games are about to begin, and the numbers on Chelsea’s backs are starting to reveal who will actually be part of this new era – and who will be watching it from somewhere else.
