Chelsea's Ahanor Loan Twist: Joining Crystal Palace Before 2027

Chelsea’s long play for teenage defender Ahanor has taken a twist, with the 18-year-old now heading to Crystal Palace on loan before eventually landing at Stamford Bridge in 2027.

Standard Sport revealed last week that Chelsea had struck an agreement for the highly rated centre-back, settled personal terms and even cleared him to travel to London for a medical. The pathway looked simple: sign, then stay. Chelsea have chosen a different route.

Instead of bedding him straight into their own squad, the Blues have decided his first taste of English football will come across the capital at Selhurst Park. Ahanor will officially join Palace on loan from Atalanta, with his long-term future already locked in: he is scheduled to join Chelsea in the summer of 2027.

There is a wrinkle. Chelsea have already sent one player to Crystal Palace this window. Axel Disasi completed a season-long loan to the Eagles, a deal with no option or obligation to buy. That existing agreement shapes how this new arrangement is structured, but it also underlines the growing pipeline between the two clubs.

Palace, then, get another significant defensive reinforcement. Ahanor arrives with more experience than his age suggests. A product of the Genoa academy, he has already broken into the Italy senior side, earning two caps this year after making his debut earlier in the campaign.

At club level, he became a regular for Atalanta last season, racking up 28 Serie A appearances and stepping onto the Champions League stage for the first time last September. This is not a speculative project; it is a player already hardened by top-level football, now being dropped into the Premier League’s intensity.

While Ahanor’s future is mapped out years in advance, Chelsea’s midfield picture is far less settled.

The club remain keen on Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara and are actively exploring a move for the 22-year-old. His name has risen up the list as uncertainty grows around Enzo Fernandez, who has now missed two Chelsea matches in a row amid strong interest from Manchester City.

Fernandez was absent again for the wild 4-3 win over Brighton at the weekend. Asked to explain the omission, Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso was blunt about the standards he expects inside a dressing room under transfer noise.

"We assess what's best for the team and considering everything, the situation, we need a team that is focused, with everyone involved that's fully committed and engaged with the game," Alonso said.

Chelsea are plotting years ahead with Ahanor, juggling the present with Camara, and bracing themselves for a possible fight over Fernandez. The squad is shifting. The question now is how different it will look by the time that 2027 plan finally lands.
