Celtic's Haissem Hassan Deal: A Closer Look at the Numbers

Celtic’s move for Haissem Hassan looks a lot leaner on the balance sheet than many expected during a summer-long chase that came wrapped in talk of a £9 million outlay.

The Egypt international finally signed on from Real Oviedo this week, ending a drawn-out saga that had him linked with a hefty price tag. Early reports suggested the overall package could push towards that £9m mark, a figure that raised eyebrows even in a market where fees climb by the window.

A new breakdown from Spain tells a different story.

La Voz de Asturias report that Celtic have committed to an initial payment of around €5.5m. On top of that, Oviedo could bank up to a further €2m in performance-related bonuses, taking the potential total towards €7.5m if every clause is triggered.

So the structure is clear: modest guarantee, ambitious upside.

Oviedo have also protected their longer-term interest. The Spanish club are said to have secured a 20 per cent sell-on clause, but with an important caveat — it applies only to any profit Celtic make on a future sale, not the full transfer fee. If Celtic eventually move Hassan on for more than they paid, Oviedo take a slice of the gain, not the whole sum.

Even then, Oviedo will not walk away with all of Celtic’s initial money. Villarreal are reported to be entitled to 40 per cent of Oviedo’s profit, having sold Hassan to them for around €700,000 in 2024. On a €5.5m starting fee from Celtic, Oviedo’s profit is estimated at roughly €4.8m before Villarreal’s share is deducted, which helps explain why the Spanish reports suggest Oviedo will ultimately clear around €3.6m at this stage.

Strip away the layers, and the picture from a Celtic perspective is stark: the guaranteed outlay looks significantly lower than the headline £9m figure that followed the winger all summer.

Any extra cash heading to Spain hinges on Hassan’s impact in Glasgow — the bonuses kick in only if he delivers on the pitch, and the sell-on clause only bites if his value climbs and Celtic cash in down the line.

Celtic have not released any official numbers, so these figures remain unconfirmed. But if the Spanish reporting is accurate, the Scottish champions have landed a highly rated wide player on terms that give them exactly what clubs crave in this market: upside without over-committing on day one.
