Carrick Aims to Keep Fernandes Central to Manchester United Project

Michael Carrick is making no secret of it: he wants Bruno Fernandes driving his Manchester United side, on the pitch and in the dressing room, for as long as possible.

Fernandes, now 31, has entered the final year of his contract. United hold an option to extend it by another 12 months, but the situation is far from straightforward. A £57m release clause hangs over the deal and heavyweight interest is circling. Juventus and AC Milan are monitoring the situation, while Galatasaray are also weighing up whether to trigger the clause.

Ideally, United would tie their captain down on fresh terms and remove the uncertainty. So far, there has been no breakthrough on a new agreement.

Carrick, speaking in Maynooth on Thursday, chose not to wade into the contractual wrangle. He sidestepped the boardroom detail, but his message about Fernandes’ importance was unmistakable.

“Listen, we want top players,” he said. “Every good team has players that have made a major impact. That's how it is. Bruno has had that for a period of time here. We want to keep pushing and want to get the best out of Bruno and the team around him.”

Carrick is not just talking about goals, assists or set-piece quality. Inside the club, Fernandes is seen as a standard-setter. He wears the armband, but his influence stretches beyond matchdays.

He is a constant presence around younger players, checking in, offering advice, setting an example in training. In a squad that has been reshaped and questioned, that kind of voice carries weight.

"He's been so positive since I came back," Carrick said. "As much as the performances, it's how he has been around the group, how he leads and takes time to help others, especially the younger players. That comes into play. He's in a really good place and looking forward to the season."

So while the release clause tempts suitors across Europe and the contract clock ticks down, Carrick is building his season around his captain. The question now is whether United’s hierarchy can match that conviction and keep their most influential figure at Old Trafford beyond this year.
