Burnley Ends Finotive Sponsorship Before Season Start

Burnley’s new season hasn’t even started and already they’ve had to tear up one of its supposed cornerstones.

Six weeks. That’s all the time their partnership with principal sponsor Finotive One survived before the club’s hierarchy pulled the plug, scrapping what had been billed as a key commercial pillar for the 2026-27 campaign.

On Friday morning, the club confirmed the split in a brief, blunt statement that left little room for doubt. The relationship with the Cyprus-registered trading platform was over, effective immediately.

“Burnley Football Club is disappointed to confirm that its agreement with Finotive has been terminated,” the club told supporters, stressing that the board had “acted decisively to protect the Club’s interests, and those of our supporters, while ensuring preparations for the new season continue uninterrupted, both on and off the pitch.”

The words were calm. The fallout is anything but.

Marketing blitz turned marketing mess

Burnley had gone big on Finotive. Star-led launch videos. A viral push around their new cream away kit. Arnold Schwarzenegger and JJ Watt front and centre as the Clarets tried to give their brand a global punch.

All of it is now unusable.

The timing could hardly be more awkward. West Ham United visit Turf Moor on Sunday for Burnley’s Championship curtain-raiser, yet the club has spent the final days before kick-off frantically unpicking a sponsorship that was supposed to define their season off the pitch.

Supporters who rushed to buy the new home and away shirts are suddenly holding obsolete merchandise. Every Finotive-branded jersey — including that much-hyped cream strip — has been yanked from sale, both online and in club shops, while new stock is prepared with replacement sponsor Vertu Motors on the front.

The club has moved quickly to limit the anger. A full refund and exchange programme is in place for anyone who bought the Finotive shirts. Some fans will keep them as curiosities, a short-lived chapter in Burnley’s commercial history. Many more are expected to trade them in for the Vertu-branded version.

Clues were there before the announcement

For those paying close attention, the collapse didn’t come entirely out of the blue.

In broadcaster promos ahead of Sunday’s clash with West Ham, defender Kyle Walker appeared in a Burnley shirt with a blank front — no Finotive logo, no sponsor at all. It jarred, especially given that the team had worn Finotive One branding throughout pre-season and as recently as last weekend’s Carabao Cup first-round tie against Notts County.

Questions grew louder when, 24 hours before Friday’s official announcement, all references to Finotive One quietly vanished from the club’s website and social media channels. One of the summer’s headline commercial deals had effectively been ghosted.

The confirmation merely put into words what the digital clean-up had already shouted.

Another twist in Burnley’s sponsor saga

For Burnley, this is not an isolated misstep. It’s the latest episode in a turbulent run with shirt sponsors under ALK Capital’s ownership.

Chairman Alan Pace has spoken publicly about wanting to move the club away from the betting sector. Yet the badge on the front of the shirt has repeatedly circled back to gambling companies such as W88 and SpreadEx.

Last year, the Gambling Commission issued warnings to Burnley and several other clubs over their ties to sites operated by TGP Europe, after an investigation uncovered failings in anti-money laundering controls and partner checks. That scrutiny underscored the need for more rigorous vetting and a cleaner commercial profile.

Finotive One was supposed to be part of that reset — a step into a different industry, a fresh start after the gambling rows. Instead, the partnership has collapsed before a single league ball has been kicked.

Now Burnley head into their opener against West Ham with a blank space where a carefully choreographed sponsor narrative was meant to sit, scrambling to convince supporters and partners alike that the chaos off the pitch won’t define the season on it.
