Bruno Guimaraes Joins Arsenal: Aiming for Dynasty

Bruno Guimaraes has walked into Arsenal at full speed, even if his body is forcing him to tap the brakes.

The £75million signing from Newcastle watched from the stands on Friday night, a tight groin keeping him out of what should have been his Emirates Stadium debut. On the pitch, his new team barely missed a beat, brushing aside newly promoted Coventry 3-0 to begin their Premier League title defence with authority.

This came on the back of a statement 3-0 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield in Cardiff. Two games, two clean sheets, six goals scored. Arsenal look ominous. Guimaraes believes that is only the beginning.

“He wants to make a dynasty”

The Brazilian speaks about Mikel Arteta with the enthusiasm of a convert.

“Since the first time I spoke to him, he wants to make a dynasty here, trying to win everything as possible and I am always very excited of his idea,” Guimaraes told the Men In Blazers network on YouTube.

That word – dynasty – is not used lightly. It hints at something beyond a single title defence or a good season in Europe. It suggests a project built to last, and Guimaraes is convinced he has joined at exactly the right moment.

“Everything is very new for me, and I am just trying to get used to the players, to the manager, to the staff, the way he works,” he said. “I can say that I am still finding my best way in the group, but I love it here.”

He has not yet kicked a ball at the Emirates, but he already sounds embedded in the idea of Arsenal as a team expected to dominate, not just compete.

A midfielder for every role

Arteta has added Guimaraes to a midfield that already looks stacked, and the 26-year-old knows versatility will be his ticket into the XI.

“I can play every position in the midfield, but this just depends on Mikel’s ideas,” he said. “He said to me that I can play everywhere, and I said yes, it just depends on you and where he wanted me to play. I am just ready to play for Arsenal, no matter where.”

It is the sort of answer every manager wants to hear, especially one trying to build a side capable of challenging across four competitions. Guimaraes is not talking about minutes or roles. He is talking about medals.

“I don’t have like one target – we go for everything,” he added. “I think the potential we have in this team is unbelievable.

“I don’t want to put targets, we need to think game again and let’s see how far we can go, but with this team, I have a big chance of winning trophies.”

No talk of top-four. No talk of transition. The language is simple: win, and win a lot.

Villa next, and a familiar face

Arsenal’s next test comes on Monday night away at Aston Villa, a fixture that already carries a subplot.

Ezri Konsa, signed by Villa for £51m last week, could be thrown in against his former club. The England defender did not feature against Manchester City and also sat out the Coventry game, but could now be fast-tracked into the squad for a meeting that would be emotionally charged from his perspective and tactically intriguing for Arteta.

While Guimaraes waits for his first home appearance, another Brazilian at Arsenal appears to be nearing the exit.

Gabriel Martinelli has not featured in either of the opening two games and is, according to reports, closing in on a move to Saudi Arabia with Al Hilal. A fan favourite and a symbol of the early Arteta rebuild, his departure would underline just how ruthless this new phase might be.

Arteta wants a dynasty. Guimaraes has signed up for it. The question now is who else survives – and who thrives – as Arsenal try to turn that ambition into an era.
