Bruno Fernandes Negotiates New Deal with Manchester United
Fabrizio Romano has moved to cool the noise around Bruno Fernandes’ future, insisting Manchester United’s captain is negotiating – not walking away.
Reports this week claimed Fernandes had rejected a new deal at Old Trafford and could even leave on a free transfer, with journalist Sacha Tavolieri suggesting United’s offer added only €500,000 per year to his salary and was swiftly turned down. The line was clear: talks had stalled, and the clock was ticking towards a 2027 exit.
Romano sees it very differently.
United ‘protected’ by contract clause
Speaking on his YouTube channel, the transfer specialist said he wanted to “clarify two things” about the situation after suggestions Fernandes might run down his deal.
“First point, leaving on a free. Bruno is out of contract in 2027, but there is an option to extend the contract for one more season. So Manchester United are absolutely protected,” Romano explained.
That clause means United can trigger an extra year, taking Fernandes’ deal through to 2028 and removing any immediate threat of him walking away for nothing.
Romano also underlined the strength of the bond between player and club. Fernandes, who admitted last December it “hurt” him that United had considered cashing in when Al-Hilal came calling last summer, has since underlined his value with a stellar Premier League campaign: nine goals and 21 assists in 35 appearances.
“The relationship between Bruno and Manchester United is still a very important relationship. Bruno is a United legend, a top player who will stay forever in terms of memory. To leave on bad terms is not Bruno Fernandes’ style,” Romano said.
‘It’s about negotiating, not rejecting’
The second point, Romano stressed, is the nature of the talks themselves. This is not a flat refusal, but a live negotiation.
“Second, it’s not about rejecting a contract. It’s about negotiating. That’s different. To say no and to say, ‘I want this, you want that, let’s try to find a solution’ are two different things,” he said.
“For sure, Bruno Fernandes and United, while I’m recording this video, don’t have an agreement on the new contract. But Manchester United and Bruno Fernandes are negotiating, and the negotiations are ongoing.”
That process is unfolding against a busy backdrop. Galatasaray are prepared to double Fernandes’ wages and have been credited with a €50m offer to United, according to the Daily Telegraph. United, back in the Champions League and rebuilding under a new sporting structure, see their captain as central to the next phase.
Romano echoed that internal view: “The relationship is very good. Bruno is not a normal player. Bruno is the captain of Manchester United. Manchester United are in love with Bruno. Manchester United are finally back into Champions League football and Bruno will be a big part of the squad.
“Michael Carrick believes Bruno is a very important player. So there is no reason to create panic or drama around this. There is a negotiation, there is a conversation. Let’s see how it goes.”
Salary, length, release clause: the real battle lines
Behind the headlines, the key issues are familiar: money, years and power.
“It’s about the salary,” Romano said. “Don’t forget that Rashford returned to Manchester United, and so Rashford’s salary is obviously a point.
“Then there is the length of the contract. That’s an important point. And then there is the release clause, because Bruno has a release clause in his current contract at United of around €65m.”
That clause is another major talking point. United and Fernandes’ camp must decide whether it stays, disappears or gets reshaped.
“Now they have to understand whether to keep the clause, remove the clause, change the numbers, when to activate it, how many years it is valid for. There are so many topics to discuss,” Romano added.
This is not a quick signature situation. At 29, edging into the final peak years of his career, Fernandes knows every detail of this deal will help define his last two or three major contracts.
“That’s not an easy negotiation that takes five seconds to sign a new contract. Bruno is a fantastic player, but he’s no longer 20 years old. Every single contract now becomes important because it’s going to be one of the last two or three contracts of his career.
“For sure, it’s an important moment. That’s a negotiation. There is no need for panic or drama.”
The noise will keep swirling while Galatasaray circle and agents talk. But for now, United’s captain is not edging towards the exit door; he is deep in the kind of hard, detailed bargaining that decides how long a club legend stays at the heart of Old Trafford.
