Atletico Madrid's Transfer Standoff: Alvarez Benched as Barcelona Circles
Diego Simeone has drawn a hard line. Julian Alvarez, Atletico Madrid’s star striker and headline transfer saga, will start the LaLiga season on the bench.
The Argentine wants out and has set his sights on Barcelona. Reports in Spain suggest the Catalan club are now firmly in pole position to land the former Manchester City forward, even with Arsenal circling and ready to pounce if the door opens. The stand-off has left Atletico’s opener on Wednesday overshadowed by a battle over one of their key players.
Atletico, though, are not blinking. CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has been adamant: the club would not even accept €200m for Alvarez. The message is blunt – Barcelona may be the player’s preference, Arsenal may be lurking, but Atletico will dictate the terms or keep their man.
City’s midfield shake-up: Enzo price soars, Bouaddi incoming
Manchester City are wrestling with their own transfer arithmetic.
Their interest in Enzo Fernandez has not gone away, but the cost has just rocketed. City missed Chelsea’s Friday deadline to submit an offer, and that delay has come at a price. The Premier League champions now face paying significantly more than the £120m Chelsea were demanding only last week if they want to prise the midfielder from Stamford Bridge.
At the same time, City are preparing for a major midfield reset. They are set to sign 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi in a deal worth £85m, a huge outlay on a teenager and a clear statement about the next generation of their engine room. That move comes on the back of selling Ballon d’Or winner Rodri to Barcelona in a deal that could rise to £65m, a stunning departure that leaves a sizeable void and raises the stakes on Bouaddi’s development.
United ready to shut the door on Bruno bid
In Manchester’s red half, the answer is simpler: no.
Manchester United are poised to reject an audacious approach from Galatasaray for captain Bruno Fernandes. The Turkish club are hunting a marquee name this summer and had prepared a comprehensive financial package that would have doubled the 31-year-old’s salary.
United’s stance is clear. Fernandes is not for sale. For all the noise around Old Trafford this window, the armband and the influence that comes with it are staying put.
Liverpool cool on Mbaye but keep Barcola in sight
Liverpool’s forward planning has taken a twist in Paris.
They had reportedly agreed terms with Paris Saint-Germain youngster Ibrahim Mbaye, but fresh rumours now suggest they are backing away from the 18-year-old. The shift does not mean they are turning their backs on PSG entirely.
Their interest in Mbaye’s teammate Bradley Barcola remains alive. Both Mbaye and France international Barcola were left out of PSG’s squad for the French Super Cup on Sunday, a decision that only fuels speculation around their futures. The European champions were set to demand £145m for Barcola, who is also on Arsenal’s radar, but Liverpool are prepared to play the long game, probing for a lower fee and waiting for PSG’s resolve to soften.
From Simeone’s benching of Alvarez to City’s midfield upheaval and Liverpool’s patient pursuit of Barcola, the market is moving fast. The question now is which of these power plays will actually reshape the season – and which will end as nothing more than expensive standoffs.
