Manchester United have started preliminary talks with Bruno Fernandes over a new contract, determined to shut down the noise around their captain’s future and keep him at Old Trafford for the long haul.

Galatasaray have emerged as serious contenders for his signature, with reports indicating the Turkish champions are ready to put a four-year deal on the table that would effectively double his current salary. The offer from Istanbul is believed to include a £3.5m signing-on fee, a powerful lure for a player entering the final phase of his elite career.

It is not the first time Fernandes has stood at a crossroads.

Last summer, he came close to a blockbuster move to the Saudi Pro League. His agent, Miguel Pinho, held high-level discussions in Riyadh with Al-Hilal, who were prepared to put forward an eye-watering £200m package over three years.
