Bristol City Shows Character in 1-0 Win Against Watford

Michael Skubala cut a satisfied figure after Bristol City ground out a 1-0 win over Watford, a result he framed as a statement of character as much as a response to form.

Coming off back-to-back defeats, City could easily have tightened up, played safe, and hoped for the best. Skubala wanted the opposite. He wanted a reaction.

"I'm really proud of the boys, it's not easy to go off two losses and to bounce back," he told BBC Radio Bristol, highlighting the resilience his side showed under pressure. He picked out both sides of their display – the discipline without the ball and the intent with it.

"I thought they showed some good moments, some real character to defend well at times, to attack the game," he said.

This was not a win built on the usual core either. Skubala shuffled his pack, trusted the squad players, and they answered him.

"Also, lots of changes for the lads that haven't played many minutes – I thought they showed today as a good group, a true group and a squad," he added, underlining how those on the fringes had stepped into the spotlight.

For the head coach, that togetherness mattered as much as the three points.

"We have to be proud of the guys, who have come in and put a performance in, who haven't had so many minutes but we're going to need them all."

The clean sheet carried its own weight. City have not had enough of them for Skubala’s liking, so he set the players a clear target. They met it.

"The lads were challenged with getting a clean sheet because we haven't had enough of them so I'm really proud of that because it just shows the growth we're going through."

One goal, one clean sheet, and a manager convinced his squad is starting to harden at exactly the right time.
