Brian Sorensen Joins Republic of Ireland Women’s Team for World Cup Play-Offs

Brian Sorensen is set for a swift return to the international stage, with the former Everton manager joining the Republic of Ireland women’s set-up for their World Cup play-off campaign later this year.

The Dane will step in as assistant coach, teaming up with Liverpool coach Amber Whiteley on the staff. Together, they will support manager Carla Ward as Ireland chase a place at the Women’s World Cup.

Sorensen will combine the role with his current job as technical director of Aston Villa Women. He is expected to remain in that position and link up with Ireland only during international windows, adding his experience without stepping away from his club responsibilities.

There is already a familiar dynamic at the top of the Ireland staff. Ward previously went head-to-head with Sorensen in the Women’s Super League when she was in charge of Villa and he was in the Everton dugout. Now they move from rivals to colleagues, tasked with navigating the tension and jeopardy of play-off football.

World Cup Play-off Details

Ireland face Kazakhstan in the first round of World Cup play-off qualifying, a two-legged tie scheduled for 9 and 13 October. The margins will be tight, the stakes obvious.
