Brad Friedel Joins American Bid for Shrewsbury Town

Brad Friedel is set to return to English football in a very different role – as part of an American-led bid to take control of struggling League Two side Shrewsbury Town.

The former USA international goalkeeper has emerged as a key figure in a Miami-based group fronted by 58-year-old real estate magnate Scott Davidson, who is lining up to buy the club and end one of the longest chairmanships in the English game.

A new American era on the horizon

BBC Shropshire report that Davidson, who has been a director at ambitious Scottish League Two side The Spartans since July 2021, has already cleared the crucial regulatory hurdles. On Monday it was confirmed he had passed the English Football League’s owners’ and directors’ test, as well as scrutiny from the Independent Football Regulator, giving him the green light to proceed.

Talks between Davidson’s camp and Shrewsbury continue, but the deal is expected to be wrapped up within the next few weeks. When it lands, it will close the book on 85-year-old chairman Roland Wycherley’s three-decade spell at the helm.

The agreement would see both Davidson and Friedel join the Shrewsbury board. For supporters, that means two very different names to get used to. One will need googling. The other has been part of the British football landscape for years.

Friedel’s backing, Davidson’s vision

Friedel has been heavily involved in the process behind the scenes, playing what is described as a key supportive role during the takeover talks. He has spoken of Davidson in glowing terms, calling him one of the most talented and humble people he has ever met.

Davidson does not bring the name recognition of a former Premier League keeper, but his CV is stacked. A self-made multi-millionaire from the commercial real estate world, he studied at the Yale School of Management before spending 12 years as a managing director at New York banking giant JPMorganChase.

Only after making his fortune did his involvement in football truly accelerate. And when he moved into the game, the impact was immediate.

Spartans success as a blueprint

Davidson is the majority shareholder at The Spartans, the Edinburgh club whose rise since his arrival has been striking. Under his watch they have climbed from the Lowland League to the brink of SPFL League One, a surge widely hailed as one of Scottish football’s standout success stories of recent seasons.

His influence has not been limited to the first team. Davidson has also helped drive the growth of Spartans’ football foundation, now regarded as one of the biggest in the UK, deepening the club’s roots in its community and broadening its reach well beyond matchdays.

There is another unusual line on his footballing résumé. Davidson holds a UEFA A licence – not to coach week in, week out, but to better understand the demands placed on the people he employs.

He believes that qualification helps him see the game through a manager’s eyes: the training-ground detail, the tactical work, the resources required to compete. It is a level of preparation owners rarely bring with them.

Now he wants to apply that approach at Shrewsbury Town, with Friedel alongside him in the boardroom. The only question left is how quickly that vision can be turned into a new direction for a club in need of one.
