Bayern Munich Not Pursuing Florian Wirtz Reunion Yet

Bayern Munich have cooled talk of a dramatic Florian Wirtz reunion – for now – but the Liverpool playmaker’s name is not leaving their orbit any time soon.

The German champions chased Wirtz hard before his £116m move from Bayer Leverkusen to Anfield in the summer of 2025, battling Liverpool and Manchester City for one of Europe’s most coveted attacking talents. Liverpool won that race, Arne Slot winning over the player in face‑to‑face meetings in Munich and on Merseyside.

The fee, the fanfare, the expectation – all enormous.

The reality since? Far more complicated.

Wirtz has struggled to fully impose himself in the Premier League, his adaptation blunted by the league’s intensity and physical edge. His underwhelming start has inevitably triggered whispers in Germany that Bayern could swoop in again if Liverpool’s patience wears thin.

Those rumours have now been firmly checked.

Bayern brief: no active move for Wirtz

German reporter Christian Falk has made it clear Bayern are not currently working on a move to bring Wirtz back to the Bundesliga.

“It is NOT TRUE: Bayern Munich are tracking Florian Wirtz and could make a shock move for the Liverpool player. My information is that this is not true,” Falk said on CF Bayern Insider.

The history between club and player is real, though, and it keeps the story alive. Bayern held two secret meetings with Wirtz before his Liverpool switch – one in Munich, one in Liverpool – with Slot ultimately convincing the Germany international to choose Anfield.

That backdrop guarantees speculation, especially when questions surface over his form in England. Falk, however, pushed back on the idea that Wirtz is flopping.

“To be clear, I don’t necessarily share those concerns; I think Wirtz is performing better than he did last year. He has a new position in the team,” he said, while also pointing to another key thread in Bayern’s attacking puzzle: Jamal Musiala’s stop-start rhythm after illness and last season’s injury issues.

So Bayern are watching their own house first.

Swap talk with Olise hovers in the background

Falk stresses there is “nothing planned” between Bayern and Wirtz right now. The door is not bolted shut, though, especially when Michael Olise’s future is thrown into the mix.

Reports have floated the idea of a swap deal involving Wirtz and Olise, with one heading to Bavaria and the other to Anfield. Falk did not dismiss the concept outright, but underlined how many moving parts would need to align.

“So, you can see where some reports have taken these conditions and claimed that one plus one equals two,” he explained. “Of course, if Florian Wirtz were, at some point in future, interested in making a return to the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich would be the first team he’d talk to. However, there is nothing planned.”

Right now, Bayern feel well stocked. They have a “big squad”, confidence is high, and Musiala remains tied down on a long contract. Vincent Kompany is also reshaping the attack, with Olise being tested as the central fulcrum – the same role he occupies for France.

That tactical shift gives Bayern different routes through games and less immediate urgency to rip up the blueprint for Wirtz. The financial reality matters too: Liverpool paid a huge fee for the German, and any negotiation would start from that point.

Even so, Olise is a pressure point. “Everyone is hoping the former Crystal Palace star signs a new contract,” Falk said. If he does not, and opts for a move, the equation changes quickly. Bayern could explore a swap with Liverpool or cash in via a big sale to a club such as Real Madrid, then redirect those funds towards Wirtz.

“The German can play on the side or centrally. This would be a very interesting thing,” Falk noted of Wirtz’s versatility. “So, there are many, many positions which have to be discussed. I wouldn’t say it’s not true that Bayern Munich would have thought of that.”

For now, Bayern are not knocking on Liverpool’s door. But with Wirtz still finding his feet in England and Olise’s contract situation unresolved, the pieces for a future power play are already on the board.
