Barcelona Begins Title Defence Without Rodri: Hansi Flick's Strategy

Hansi Flick has drawn a clear line in the sand: Barcelona’s LaLiga title defence will start without their marquee midfield signing.

Rodri, brought in from Manchester City in a deal that could climb to 76.5 million euros, will not feature in Sunday’s opener against Elche. Flick confirmed the plan on Saturday, stressing preparation over spectacle.

“He’s very concentrated, focused, our plan is that he will arrive on Monday with the team,” the Barcelona coach told reporters. “This is the plan. He’s a fantastic player, a leader, and his personality is very great.”

So no Rodri at the Martinez Valero. But the wait should not be long. Flick indicated the Spanish World Cup winner could be ready to take part in Barca’s second league match, against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, once he has integrated with the squad.

Midfield strengthened, attack still in flux

Rodri’s arrival is designed to anchor and elevate Barcelona’s midfield, but the squad sheet still has a glaring gap further up the pitch.

With Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres gone, the champions are still hunting a centre-forward in the transfer market. Flick kept his cards close to his chest when asked who would lead the line against Elche, offering no clues on his starting No 9.

What he did do was shine a spotlight on one of pre-season’s surprise stories: 18-year-old Egyptian striker Hamza Abdelkarim.

“Hamza is having a really great pre-season,” Flick said. “He’s a No 9, he’s young, and he has a lot of potential, and also he scored goals. This is the important thing when you’re playing in this position, and he made a great job.”

Four goals in friendlies have pushed Abdelkarim into the conversation, at least as an option off the bench. For a squad suddenly light on out-and-out strikers, that matters.

Barcelona do have other ways to construct a front line. New signings Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, both natural wingers, can operate as false nines. So can Raphinha and Dani Olmo. Flick has flexibility, but not yet a clear heir to Lewandowski.

Cancelo ready, Rodri waits

One new arrival will be thrown straight into the action.

Joao Cancelo, signed this week to reinforce the flanks, is available for the trip to Elche and, by Flick’s account, itching to start.

“He’s ready to play. He has unbelievable technique and a lot of passion,” the coach said.

So Barcelona begin their title defence with their new full-back primed, their new midfield general held back for a few more days, and their centre-forward puzzle still unsolved. The season opens with questions in attack, but a clear statement in the middle of the pitch: Rodri is coming, just not yet.
