Barcelona's Title Defence Begins Without Rodri

Hansi Flick will have to wait to unleash his marquee midfielder.

The Barcelona coach confirmed on Saturday that new signing Rodri will sit out the Spanish champions’ La Liga opener away to Elche on Sunday, with the former Manchester City lynchpin instead targeting a debut later in the week.

“He’s very concentrated, focused, our plan is that he will arrive on Monday with the team,” Flick told reporters. “This is the plan. He’s a fantastic player, a leader, and his personality is very great.”

Barcelona paid a fee that could climb to 76.5 million euros ($89 million) for the Spain World Cup winner, a statement move to reinforce the heart of their midfield as they begin life under Flick and chase back-to-back league titles.

The big hole, though, is further up the pitch.

With Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres both gone, Barcelona enter the first game of the season still searching the market for a centre-forward. Flick kept his cards close to his chest when asked who would lead the line at the Martinez Valero, but one name is forcing its way into the conversation.

Hamza Abdelkarim, just 18 and still largely unknown outside scouting circles, has lit up pre-season with four goals in friendlies and has clearly caught his coach’s eye.

“Hamza is having a really great pre-season,” said Flick. “He’s a number nine, he’s young, and he has a lot of potential, and also he scored goals. This is the important thing when you’re playing in this position, and he made a great job.”

The Egyptian teenager is not the only option. New arrivals Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, both natural wingers, can slide inside and operate as false nines. So can Raphinha and Dani Olmo, giving Flick a cluster of fluid, interchanging forwards rather than a traditional penalty-box predator.

The tactical puzzle up front contrasts with the clarity at full-back. Joao Cancelo, signed this week, is ready to go immediately and will be available for the trip to Elche.

“He’s ready to play. He has unbelievable technique and a lot of passion,” Flick added.

Rodri must wait a few more days. The striker Barcelona still crave has not arrived. But the season will not wait for anyone, and Flick’s new era starts now, with youth, improvisation and a high-profile midfield general poised just over the horizon.
